Autonomic Cloud Security

Glenn Brunette, a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems has just informed me of a new project released earlier today called "OpenSolaris Immutable Service Containers" which may form the basis for what he describes as "Autonomic Security". According to Brunette using Immutable Service Containers as a core cloud building block enables some very interesting use cases in the area of adaptive and autonomic cloud security architectures. Several potential use cases are shown in a diagram set posted on flickr.

For those unfamiliar with Immutable Service Containers (ISC), it is an architectural deployment pattern used to describe a foundation for highly secure service delivery. ISCs are essentially a container into which a service or set of services is configured and deployed. First and foremost, ISCs are not based upon any one product or technology. In fact, an actual instantiation of an ISC can and often will differ based upon customer and application requirements. That said, each ISC embodies at its core the key principles inherent in the Sun Systemic Security framework including: self-preservation, defense in depth, least privilege, compartmentalization and proportionality.

As part of a more holistic view, it is expected that Immutable Service Containers will form the most basic architectural building block for more complex, highly adaptive and autonomic security architectures. The goal of this project is is to more fully describe the architecture and attributes of ISCs, their inherent benefits, their construction as well as to document practical examples using various web-scale software applications.

Immutable Service Containers offer the following benefits over more traditional deployment models:

Consistent, repeatable and secure packaging for the deployment and management of services. "One service per container", configured once and deployed everywhere.
Specific and clear approach to integrating platform security with services to provide enhanced security beyond what is typically deployed in most IT organizations today.
Strategy for the implementation of recommended security practices in a focused, supported way.
Flexible security to accommodate a variety of application and operational requirements and scenarios.

Also interesing to note, support for Sun's VirtualBox is coming soon as well. This interesting project is certainly worth a closer look.

Expanding Maneuver Warfare in IT

Earlier this week I published "Cloud Computing: The Dawn of Maneuver Warfare in IT Security" via Ulitzer. In publishing the article my intent was to explore the more dynamic approach to information security offered by cloud computing. Although the conversation continues in earnest, today I would like to highlight Ben's thoughts from Iron Fog:

"What about managing virus outbreaks, patch deployment and vulnerability detection?

managing virus outbreaks - If I can scale my security infrastructure rapidly, I can scan my distributed filesystem and workstations, I can hunt down and remove infections - in theory I can scale my cloud rapidly enough to combat warhol-esque worms.

patch deployment - if I need to force patches across my environment, I can deploy a swarm of servers that will connect to every server and workstation in my enterprise and force the patch down (after I've spun up a multiple VM's to test/socialise the patch against my standard configurations).

vulnerability detection - Scanning a class B sized network can take a while, but what if I can launch a few hundred servers and ask them to scan a less than a class C each, in parallel (note: this idea wasn't mine, credit to Richard at Enomaly) - I can get near-realtime vulnerability intelligence on my environment at relatively low cost. Running a few hundred EC2 servers for less than an hour is pretty cheap, especially if compared against buying a whole bunch of expensive scanning appliances (then again, there's nessus)."

These examples are perfect extensions on the idea of maneuver warfare in information technology. His post also brings up some concerns that need to be addressed. Let's keep the ideas coming.

RumorMill: Amazon to Open Source Web Services API's

I usually try to avoid posting rumors but this one is particularly interesting, I first heard about it a few weeks back but recently had independent confirmation. Word is Amazon's legal team is currently "investigating" open sourcing their various web services API's including EC2, S3 etc. (The rumor has not been officially confirmed by Amazon, but my sources are usually pretty good)

If true, this move makes a lot of sense for a number of reasons. The first and foremost is it would help foster the adoption of Amazon's API's which are already the de facto standards used by hundreds of thousands of AWS customers around the globe thus solidifying Amazons position as the market leader.

By actually giving their stamp of approval, they would be in a sense officially giving the opportunity for other players to embrace the interface methods while keeping the actual implementation (their secret sauce) a secret. If anything this may really help Amazon win over Enterprise customers by enabling an ecosystem of compatible "private cloud" products and services that could seamlessly move between Amazon's Public Cloud and existing data center infrastructure.

This would also continue the momentum started by a number of competitors/partners who have begun adopting the various AWS API's including Sun Microsystems in their Open Cloud Platform and the EUCALYPTUS project.

From a legal standpoint this would help negate some of the concerns around API liability. Amazon is known to have an extensive patent portfolio and in past has not been afraid to enforce it. A clear policy regarding the use of their API's would certainly help companies that up until now have been reluctant to adopt them.

Lastly this provides the opportunity to foster a ecosystem of API driven applications to emerge (EUCALYPTUS is perfect example). Another possible opportunity I wrote about awhile back is the creation of a Universal EC2 API adapter (UEC2) that could plug into your existing infrastructure tools and is completely platform agnostic.

At the heart of this concept is a universal EC2 abstraction, similar to ODBC, (a platform-independent database abstraction layer). Like ODBC a user could install the specific EC2 api-implementation, through which a lightweight EC2 API daemon (Think Libvirt) is able to communicate with traditional virtual infrastructure platforms such as VMware, Xen, Hyper-V etc using a standardized EC2 API. The user then has the ability to have their EC2 specific applications communicate directly with any infrastructure using this EC2 Adapter. The adapter then relays the results back and forth between the the other various infrastructure platforms & API's. Maybe it's time for me to get moving on this concept.
