If multimillion-dollar data centers are getting their own set of wheels and winding up in containers, it might be a good idea to tabs on them.

Savi Technology, a Lockheed Martin company, has come up with what it says is the first asset and shipment monitoring device that combines a Global Positioning System (GPS), active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and satellite communications, your basic belt-and-suspenders approach.

The hybrid ST-694 GlobalTag is targeted at folks who would appreciate continuous monitoring and precise location information on their stuff most anytime anywhere, including places where there's no terrestrial reader infrastructure.

The GlobalTag tracking technology, co-developed and trialed with Numerex Corporation, a machine-to-machine (M2M) house, is currently available in "select" quantities for pilot field operations.

Plans call for GlobalTag to become generally available as a DASH7 technology later this year, supporting the ISO 18000-7 standard for active RFID, which will help promote interoperability with compatible networks and devices.

Savi has provided the active RFID products for the Defense Department's In-Transit Visibility network, which is the world's largest RFID network and tracks about 35,000 conveyances daily across more than 4,000 locations and 40 countries.
