Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

TOKYO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 08/01/05 -- Aplix Corporation (TSE: 3727) announced today that its JBlend™ Java™ platform is deployed in O2's XM music phone (from Jutland-based FL Telecom), the first mobile phone based on Intel 2.5G cellular processor platform. With Aplix's optimized JBlend and Intel XScale® technology, the phone is positioned as a multimedia device supporting Java 3D games, video and music playback with up to 1,000 tracks on the memory card.

"Intel is very pleased with the Intel XScale technology optimizations Aplix made to create a rich Java solution for the XM phone," said Gary Forni, ISV Enabling Director of Intel's Cellular and Handheld Group. "We have known Aplix to be a leader in Java solutions for mobile phones and we anticipate more collaboration with Aplix on future Intel XScale technology-based platforms utilizing their leading JBlend platform."

"Consumers are demanding a wider array of multimedia-rich features like music player from their mobile devices while service providers continue to deliver new applications that will bring value to their customers," said Wesley Kuo, President and CSO of Aplix Corporation. "Working with Intel will enable us to ease the transition for wireless device manufacturers seeking to meet the demands of consumers and service providers."
