Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Award Nomination Delight for NSDesign
NSDesign finalists for two ROCCO awards

By: Gary Ennis
Oct. 9, 2009 03:38 PM

INNOVATIVE e-commerce company NSDesign has topped an already successful year with a double nomination in the annual Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Awards.

The company is short-listed in two categories for the prestigious business accolades with Managing Director Gary Ennis hoping for a repeat performance of 2008 when the firm won Outstanding Company of the Year <25 Employees.
NSDesign had already been celebrating recently with new business wins of approximately £50,000, boosting its predicted growth this year by a further 15% for 2009/2010.
Delighted Gary said:
“Making the short-list of the ROCCO awards has really been the icing on the cake for us this year. We have been named as finalists again for Outstanding Company of the year and also for Customer Service – both of which mean so much to us.
“Despite the current economic climate we’ve had a great year and have been continuing to win new work.  With our recent business gains we now have a predicted growth of a further 15% for next year which is a fantastic result for us.”
The company has seen consistent growth in its web services offering which has increased 20% year on year.
New business for the company has included a deal with IBTIX (the International Business Technology and Innovation Exchange) and a long term partnership with NHS Staff Benefits based in Paisley.
Gary said:
“We obviously have long and short term objectives for the business and being able to continue to provide the same level of support and service to our customer base is one of the most important – which is why being nominated in that category is crucial for us.”
The winners of the nine ROCCO awards will be announced at a gala dinner on November 20th.
Chamber President Tom Johnston said:
“We have been overwhelmed by the interest in the ROCCO Awards this year, we have received a high number of applications and the quality has been incredible. We know we are facing challenging economic conditions but it is fantastic to see local companies, large and small, buck the trend and continue to expand.

Following1 year as assistant manager in a busy bar/restaurant, and a further 6 months at Barclays Stockbrokers as a customer complaint specialist, Gary joined ABACUS (The Architecture and Building Aids Computer Unit Strathclyde) – a research group within the University of Strathclyde dedicated to developing and deploying information technologies, particularly Computer Aided Design, Computer Graphics, Multimedia and Virtual Reality for architectural and urban design practice and education. At Abacus, Gary led a wide range of projects, from commercial CD Rom development, to advanced research within the field of Internet-based Virtual Reality; a subject which he gained a solid reputation in, publishing many academic papers and speaking at international conferences.
