We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
BEAVERTON, Ore., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- PolyServe, Inc. today announced an expansion of its OEM agreement with HP under which the PolyServe File Serving Solution for Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 will be bundled and sold as part of the HP Enterprise File Services Clustered Gateway.
Already the leading supplier of file services on Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 for small-to-medium businesses (SMB), HP is taking Windows Storage Server into the enterprise market with its EFS Clustered Gateway enabled by PolyServe software. The move creates a powerful file serving combination in the Windows enterprise market segment that offers dramatic price, performance and availability advantages over traditional network attached storage (NAS) appliances. The move also creates an efficient consolidation vehicle for organizations wanting to reign in the sprawl of Windows file servers and provide highly available file services.
"While old-school NAS vendors continue to push expensive, proprietary appliances as the answer to enterprise file services, the combination of HP, Microsoft and PolyServe revolutionizes the price-performance of file serving solutions," said Mike Stankey, president and CEO of PolyServe. "The HP EFS Clustered Gateway paves the way for server consolidation that produces unprecedented benefits in file serving cost, performance, scalability, administration and reliability."
The HP EFS Clustered Gateway pairs the PolyServe File Serving Solution with HP ProLiant DL380 servers to form a high-performance, low-cost and fault-tolerant alternative to traditional NAS appliances in the Windows enterprise. The software-centric PolyServe File Serving Solution integrates a central management console, symmetric cluster file system, cluster volume manager and high availability services. The PolyServe solution aggregates up to 16 ProLiant servers to form a shared data file-serving cluster with best-in-class scalability and performance.
"PolyServe is providing the key technology foundation in our strategy to offer our customers a compelling price-performance advantage for file serving," said Harry Baeverstad, director of StorageWorks NAS Division at HP. "We intend to extend our leadership in the enterprise market for Windows Storage Server, matching our success in the SMB market."
"Microsoft believes the combination of PolyServe, HP and Windows Storage Server 2003 raises the price-performance bar in the enterprise file services market," said Dr. Claude Lorenson, group product manager of the Windows Server Division at Microsoft. "The HP EFS Clustered Gateway with PolyServe software is the first highly scalable, industry-standard clustered file serving solution powered by Microsoft Windows Storage Server."
The HP gateway product can be sold as a front end to existing HP storage and as an add-on to the newly announced models of the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Arrays -- the EVA4000, 6000 and 8000. The integrated solution will be offered worldwide through HP's direct sales force and channel partners. HP provides customer support for the Clustered Gateway solution, including hardware, operating system and software.
