Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Exclusive Q&As
What's Driving CIOs Toward the Cloud?
Exclusive Q&A with Zetta’s Jeff Bell

By: Pat Romanski

Cloud Expo Europe €550 Savings here!
Cloud Expo West
$800 Savings here!

The three main factors driving CIOs to the cloud are lower costs, dynamic capacity, ease-of-use/management, and offsite data protection, stated Jeff Bell, director of corporate marketing for Cloud Expo exhibitor Zetta.

In this exclusive post-show Q&A, Zetta's Jeff Bell speaks with Cloud Expo Chair Jeremy Geelan about his views on the cloud, what is driving it and how Zetta's on-demand storage directly addresses key IT needs and concerns.

Explore Cloud Expo Sponsorship & Exhibit Opportunities !

Cloud Computing Journal: A very general question first, about Cloud Computing. Surely we've heard all of this before in various forms and guises - grid computing / utility computing, etc.? What is different this time - why is everyone so convinced it will now work?

Jeff Bell: Actually, not everyone is convinced that cloud computing will work for them, but an increasing number are convinced that it will fit at least part of their workload. Never before have the virtualization, processing and networking technologies been available to deliver on the vision of shared, hosted, elastic services. From a storage perspective, where Zetta delivers value, we started from scratch and designed and built a product and service specifically to address the unmet needs of enterprise storage managers. The resulting storage-as-a-service offers the enterprise features (interfaces, formats, protocols, management) of on-premise storage but in an on-demand business model.

Cloud Computing Journal: What are the three main factors driving CIOs toward the Cloud?

Bell: In a survey we commissioned late last year (http://www-stage.zetta.net/docViewer.php?doc=6), the most often expected benefits were lower costs, dynamic capacity, ease-of-use/management, and offsite data protection.

Cloud Computing Journal: And what are the three main barriers preventing some CIOs from moving some of the on-premise computing to the Cloud?

Bell: In the same survey (http://www-stage.zetta.net/docViewer.php?doc=6), the top barriers were security/privacy, corporate policy, data integrity/protection, and service availability/reliability.

Cloud Computing Journal: How does your own company's offering/s assist CIOs and organizations/companies?

Bell: Zetta's on-demand storage directly addresses key IT needs and concerns. With full data encryption, multi-layer data hashing and scrubbing and N+3 parity protection, data is safer and more secure stored in Zetta than it is in most enterprise storage systems. And with native file system protocols and POSIX compatible semantics, the Zetta storage service is a "drop-in" replacement or adjunct to existing storage systems. Applications do not need to be modified; they are already compatible with Zetta. It's instant access with existing protocols to unlimited terabytes of space with no on-premise hardware or software to set up or manage.

Cloud Computing Journal: Are there other players in the Cloud ecosystem offering the same - or is your company unique? Why?

Bell: Only Zetta is offering a purpose-built service that natively delivers on-demand, enterprise-class NAS with a zero on-premise footprint.

Cloud Computing Journal: We hear talk of a Cloud Revolution and also of a Cloud "evolution" - either way, what kind of time span are we talking about, do you think. In other words, for how long is Cloud Computing going to exert its pull on the minds, hearts, and budgets of all involved in modern-day Enterprise IT?

Bell: In just six months since we ran our initial survey, a new survey by Zetta already shows a shift towards adoption.

A Rock Star Faculty, Top Keynotes, Sessions, and Top Delegates!
Cloud Expo 2010 West, November 1-4, Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, California will feature technical sessions from a rock star conference faculty and the leading Cloud industry players in the world.

The growth and success of Cloud Computing will be on display at the upcoming Cloud Expo conferences and exhibitions in Prague June 21-22 and Santa Clara November 1-4.

The recent Cloud Expo at the Javits Center in New York City was the largest Cloud Computing conference ever produced, more sponsors, exhibitors and delegates than all other Cloud events of the year combined!

The four-day Santa Clara event will attract more than 6,000 delegates from 48 countries and over 200 sponsors and exhibitors on a 120,000 sq ft show floor, larger than Cloud Expo 2010 East, New York City event!

All main layers of the Cloud ecosystem will be represented in the6th and 7th International Cloud Expo - the infrastructure players, the platform providers, and those offering applications, and they'll all be here to speak, sponsor, exhibit and network.

"Cloud Expo was announced on February 24, 2007, the day the term ‘cloud computing' was coined," said Fuat Kircaali, founder and chairman of SYS-CON Events, Inc. "Cloud has become synonymous with ‘computing' and ‘software' in two short years, and this event has become the new PC Expo, Comdex, and InternetWorld of our decade. By 2012, more than 50,000 delegates per year will be attending Cloud Expo."
