Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Broadcom(R) Bluetooth(R) Makes Mitsubishi Unisen(TM) Immersive Sound LED TVs an Ideal Companion for Connected MP3 Players
Mitsubishi Selects Broadcom's Field Proven Bluetooth Technology for Advanced Audio Capabilities

By: PR Newswire
May. 19, 2010 08:00 AM

IRVINE, Calif., May 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America has selected Broadcom's advanced Bluetooth® technology for streaming stereo audio to the premium audio systems built into select Mitsubishi Unisen(TM) Immersive Sound LED televisions. As a result, Broadcom® Bluetooth technology will enable wireless MP3 and other digital music players to be a perfect sound companion with Unisen HDTVs. Broadcom has adapted and enhanced its Bluetooth solutions to gain broader adoption in consumer electronics applications, such as advanced remote control functionality and wireless audio streaming. Mitsubishi has adopted this proven technology for several new models in its line of large screen 3D DLP Home Cinema and Unisen Immersive Sound LED TVs.

Highlights/Key Facts:

  • Popular smartphone handsets continue to add integrated digital music playback capabilities, with consumers increasingly relying upon these devices as their primary music player device.
  • Almost all smartphones today include Bluetooth capabilities, making it very convenient to stream music from the handset to a premium audio system utilizing wireless technology versus connecting devices using cables.
  • The new Mitsubishi Diamond 838 line of 3D DLP Home Cinema TVs, with screen sizes ranging from 65 to 82 inches, combine 3D pictures and 3D sound to create a truly immersive home entertainment experience. Mitsubishi's unique immersive sound technology is also featured throughout its Unisen line of large screen flat panel LED televisions which range in size from 40 to 55 inches.
  • With integrated Broadcom Bluetooth technology in select new Mitsubishi 3D DLP Home Cinema TVs and Unisen Immersive Sound LED televisions, consumers can easily connect their smartphone or other MP3 player (enabled with Bluetooth) so they can enjoy a compelling audio experience without the use of wires or cables.
  • These new select Mitsubishi large screen televisions feature the Broadcom BCM2046 single-chip Bluetooth system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution -- one of the most widely adopted Bluetooth SoCs in consumer electronics applications.
    • Select Mitsubishi 3D DLP Home Cinema TVs and Unisen Immersive Sound LED TVs leverage the BCM2046 SoC solution to enable non line-of-site connectivity with smartphones and other wireless MP3 players, enabling consumers to enjoy streamed audio on their televisions.
    • The BCM2046 has gained wide adoption in consumer electronics devices, including digital televisions, video game consoles, set-top boxes and Blu-ray Disc® players, making it one of the most widely-used solutions for transforming and enhancing the user experience.
    • The BCM2046 also supports enhanced data rate (EDR) technology which is an industry standard feature that triples wireless throughput and can be used to stream music to multiple headsets or wireless speakers.
    • In addition to improving throughput, the BCM2046 improves the quality and range of Bluetooth links and offers unparalleled receiver sensitivity and transmitter output power to maintain Bluetooth connections at greater distances.
  • The new Mitsubishi 3D DLP Home Cinema and Unisen Immersive Sound LED TVs, with built-in Broadcom Bluetooth technology, will be available this summer at retail locations throughout the U.S.

Supporting Quotes:

Frank DeMartin, Vice President of Marketing, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America

"Premium audio quality is a hallmark of our immersive sound television products. We're giving consumers the television experience of an ultra high-end home theater system, seamlessly integrated into a sleek LED flat panel or large screen 3D TV package you can only get from Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi is pleased to work with Broadcom to extend the premium audio experience to personal media devices, with Bluetooth providing the ideal wireless connection to our Unisen Immersive Sound televisions."

Craig Ochikubo, Vice President & General Manager, Broadcom's Wireless Personal Area Networking line of business

"Even though many consumers are now familiar with Bluetooth and most have the technology built into their mobile phones, the full potential has hardly been tapped. The addition of Bluetooth by Mitsubishi to select high definition television sets highlights the ever wider array of applications that Bluetooth is expanding into, showing off how consumers can gain greater value from various devices by using them together."
