Drool, Britannia? Is the UK Failing the Cloud?
By Roger Strukhoff
Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Supermicro Starts New Technology Campus and Asia-Pacific Operations Center in Taiwan
- Exhibits Industry's Leading Server Technology at Computex 2010 - New TwinBlade(TM), GPU, 2U Twin with Platinum (94%+) Power Efficiency

By: PR Newswire
May. 31, 2010 07:02 PM

TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 1, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- COMPUTEX -- Super Micro Computer, Inc. (http://www.supermicro.com/index.cfm) (Nasdaq: SMCI), the global leader in server technology innovation and green computing, announced that it is expanding its Asia-Pacific operations center and new technology campus in Taiwan. The company announced new system integration services last month, and the first phase of this large-scale expansion includes the addition of over one million square feet of space to the current facilities.

"Our superior product performance has created strong customer demand throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim," said Charles Liang, CEO and president of Supermicro. "To address this demand, we are expanding our Asia-Pacific operations center to provide our customers with more localized supply and time-to-market advantages. Supermicro is very excited to share this business opportunity along with our latest product advancements at Computex."

Supermicro is displaying over 70 new server solutions at Computex (Nangang Exhibition Hall, 4th floor, booths N806-N912), optimized with such advanced features as four GbE ports, dual 10GbE ports, 18 DIMM slots and 6Gb/s SAS 2.0. Highlighted technology advancements include the award-winning TwinBlade(TM) (http://www.supermicro.com/products/Superblade/TwinBlade) with 20 dual-processor (DP) nodes in 7U, the industry's leading lineup of GPU servers (http://www.supermicro.com/gpu) optimized for new NVIDIA Tesla 20-series GPUs, 94%+ efficiency Platinum-certified power supplies, and the introduction of Supermicro's new 42U cable obstructionless SuperRack(TM). These product lines feature both Intel(R) Xeon 5600 series (Westmere) processors and AMD Opteron 6100 series (Socket G34) 8/12-Core processors.

Supermicro's latest 2U enterprise server packs the industry's best features into a single rackmount system. Powered by redundant 920-watt Platinum power supplies, this server supports eight hot-swap 3.5" SAS 2.0 (6Gb/s SAS) hard drives with onboard hardware RAID 5. It also features dual 10GbE ports, 18 DDR3 memory slots, and onboard IPMI 2.0 with media and KVM-over-LAN support. Supermicro also offers 1U versions of this server that support eight 2.5" or four 3.5" hot-swap hard drives and three expansion cards (two full-size and one low-profile).

With Supermicro's innovative architecture and resource sharing of the enclosure, cooling subsystem and switches, the TwinBlade(TM) doubles the number of dual-processor (DP) server nodes to 20 per 7U, for an incredibly dense and cost-effective 0.35U per node. This breakthrough blade design leverages the successful Twin architecture to provide optimal performance, density and value. Recently, the innovative TwinBlade(TM) won the Best Blade-Based Solution award at the 4th annual BladeSystems Insight Summit. Supporting dual 40Gb/s QDR InfiniBand switches, this optimized blade solution features industry-leading redundant 94% power supply efficiency, making it the greenest, most power-efficient server solution in the world today.

Supermicro's GPU product line includes the world's fastest 1U servers, 4U convertible towers that support four double-width GPUs along with three additional PCI-e cards for high-bandwidth I/O, and 2U Twin systems with two hot-pluggable GPU nodes and redundant power supplies. These systems also feature advanced remote monitoring and management capabilities, multiple x16 non-blocking native PCI-E 2.0 connectivity, and 1400-watt Gold Level (93%+ efficiency) power supplies. With Supermicro's advanced thermal designs, these highly parallel, multi-GPU supercomputers are ideal for graphics and computationally intensive applications in fields such as medical imaging, oil and gas exploration, quantum chemistry, financial simulation, genomics and astrophysics.

The new 42U SuperRack(TM) provides optimal hot-swap access to components from both the front and rear of the rack, making it the best solution for mounting Supermicro 2U Twin, 2U Twin2, Double-sided Storage(TM), and SuperBlade(R) systems. The SuperRack(TM) features a modular design that provides unprecedented flexibility and convenience.
