We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
Occam
Networks®, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCNW), announced today that Slic
Network Solutions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nicholville
Telephone, has chosen Occam and its BLC
6000 multiservice access platform (MSAP) to deliver advanced
broadband services to more than 700 households and 39 businesses and
anchor institutions in remote western Franklin County, NY. As part of a
$5.2 million broadband stimulus fiber project, Slic will offer triple
play services including three tiers of high-speed Internet and IPTV. The
project will be funded through a combination of Broadband Initiatives
Program (BIP) grants and loans and will extend communication options to
a region that is currently unserved.
“The local communities are both excited and surprised that we are
bringing broadband into an area that has never experienced the benefits
of high-speed Internet,” said Phillip Wagschal, CEO of Slic Network
Solutions. “We are pleased to be part of a project that bridges the
digital divide with communications services that promote growth and
development in both the townships and the outlying areas. Occam is the
perfect partner for this endeavor because they have the experience we
have depended on in the past and a reliable solution that has the
scalability needed to grow as we continue to expand into the region.”
Slic has a long-standing reputation for bringing advanced broadband
services to the areas surrounding Franklin County. Past deployments have
included constructing last-mile fiber networks to serve neighboring
communities, particularly to deliver high-speed access to anchor
institutions including hospitals, school districts, and government
offices. In keeping with that reputation, Slic and their partners will
connect hospitals to rural clinics in Franklin County via dedicated
fiber optic cables to enable better communication and shared resources
between the medical facilities.
“Even before the Broadband Stimulus Program and National Broadband Plan
were part of every day conversations, Slic/Nicholville was working with
rural communities to bring them into the digital age,” said Juan Vela,
Director, Solutions Marketing and Strategy for Occam Networks. “Occam is
committed to working with providers like Slic to help underserved and
unserved areas throughout the country become more competitive in both
local and global markets. Occam will continue to be a partner and
resource to our customers in their efforts to help communities achieve
broadband ubiquity.”
Slic has already begun working on the Franklin County project and
expects the deployment to be fully underway by the Fall. They will
deploy a 100 percent fiber optic-based network over 136 miles of cable
across five townships and the surrounding areas. Slic will utilize GPON
technologies on Occam’s BLC 6000 MSAP for the deployment, including the
BLC 6322
GPON Optical Line Termination. Residential, business and community
organization environments will be supported by the ON
2541 Optical Network Terminal (ONT).
