We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
I read some great news about a great company and great friends and thought I should share it with you here.
BlueCat Networks, provider of advance IP address management solutions that enhance IT performance and security, has just named several of my heros to their technology advisory board. Here is some of the text from their recent announcement:
BlueCat Networks, the IPAM Intelligence™ company, today announced three new members of its newly-formed Technical Advisory Board (TAB). The highly-distinguished TAB members are William (Bill) Crowell, Former Deputy Director of the National Security Agency (NSA); Bob Flores, Former CTO of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and John McFarlane the Former President of Sun Microsystems Software Division. The three new members join Ron Aitchison, the renowned DNS authority and author of the go-to DNS technology reference book, “Pro DNS and BIND.” Tasked with leveraging its vast government IT background, agency experience and DNS knowledge, the TAB will initially focus on driving BlueCat Networks’ IPAM and DNS/DHCP product development for government agencies worldwide.

After the 9/11 tragedy, Crowell served on the “Markle Foundation Task Force on National Security in the Information Age,” which published three landmark studies on Homeland Security and information sharing. He also served on numerous panels to investigate and improve military command and control, intelligence and security systems, and was named Chairman of the Director of National Intelligence Senior Advisory Group in August, 2007. Crowell co-authored, “Physical and Logical Security Convergence,” published in May, 2007, and has featured in such prestigious publications as the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, USA Today, InformationWeek, NetworkWorld, Computerworld, Federal Computer Week and CIO Magazine. He held various positions in the Directorate of Intelligence, Directorate of Support, and the National Clandestine Service, culminating in three years as the CIA’s CTO – responsible for ensuring that the CIA’s technology investments matched the needs of its mission. He also acted as the CIA’s representative on several government-wide information sharing committees and councils. Flores is now the Founder and President of Applicology Incorporated, an independent informatics and cyber security consulting firm.
John McFarlane brings more than 25 years of global technology industry expertise in the software, computing and networking sectors to the TAB. The co-founder of Vidder Inc. a venture-backed developer of cyber security software, McFarlane’s illustrious career includes positions as Chairman and CEO of Ascendent Systems, President of the Software Division and President of the Service Provider Division at Sun Microsystems as well as senior executive roles at Nortel Networks and Bell Northern Research.
Crowell, Flores and McFarlane join Ron Aitchison who was the first TAB member announced in June. Aitchison is a true DNS/DNSSECthought leader and the author of “Pro DNS and BIND”, the globally-recognized DNS technology reference book. With over 35 years experience, Aitchison has authored numerous DNS articles and blogs and has published over 3,500 pages of freely-available technical information on the web.
Congrats to BlueCat for attracting these champions of enterprise IT. I know Bill and Bob very well and know neither of them accept positions like this without extensive vetting of the company they are working with and the technologies being advanced. Their association with this company reflects great credit upon BlueCat and is reason for any enterprise technologist to take note of this company, if it has not already come to your attention.
