Workday Opens Its Integration Cloud Platform

Dave Duffield and former PeopleSoft chief strategist Aneel Bhusri started Workday in 2005

Workday, the multi-tenancy SaaS outfit Dave Duffield (pictured) started to make up for his loss of PeopleSoft to Oracle, has opened its in-house Integration Cloud Platform to customers and partners.

It’s supposed to make it easier, cheaper and quicker for users to build and test application integrations to and from Workday’s on-demand HR, payroll and financial management widgetry then deploy and manage the stuff on Workday’s cloud.

It’s only the integration piece of PaaS, not an application software development platform, and it’s Workday’s first foray into the PaaS marketplace, made possible by its acquisition three years ago of Cape Clear, the Irish Web Services-based middleware integration technology.

Customers won’t have to depend on Workday’s services arm any more or pay for the privilege of using its enterprise-class integration platform-as-a- service, which it styles iPaaS.

It says nobody else is doing it.

It’s providing a development tool called Workday Studio, meant for skilled developers and described as an IDE can be used to drag and drop reusable components that handle the plumbing of integration building.

There’s also an Enterprise Interface Builder (EIB) tool for the rest of us. It’s supposed to let business users define in-bound and out-bound integrations without any programming.

The widgetry, which is now operating at scale, has been available on the QT and is credited with effecting 110,000 integrations this quarter. Companies like Accenture, Deloitte, Towers Perrin and their consulting partners are reportedly investing resources in it.

It’s also got packaged integrations for Ceridian, Cornerstone OnDemand, Kronos, NETtime Solutions, Patersons, Plateau, SafeGuard World International, Salesforce.com, StepStone Solutions, Taleo and Xactly

Duffield and former PeopleSoft chief strategist Aneel Bhusri started Workday in 2005. The company has grown to 650 employees, 180 customers and a million seats. It says it saw 160% revenue growth last year with bookings up 90%.

Bhusri expects “the number of partners using our integration platform will grow exponentially, much like we have seen the explosion of partners around the Salesforce.com ecosystem.” He also expects integrations to become more uniform because of the cloud.

Fairchild Semiconductor, the company’s largest customer, is using Workday to simplify and standardize core human resources (HR) business processes for more than 10,000 employees and managers globally. By leveraging the power of the Workday Integration Cloud Platform, it says it executed 20 Studio integrations and eight EIBs, deploying Workday HR and Workday Payroll, along with solutions for learning management, recruiting and time tracking, across 17 countries in less than eight months.

It says “Workday’s Integration Cloud Platform played a major role in our decision to replace our on-premise system with Workday software-as-a- service. Since Workday opened its platform, we have already successfully built 28 custom integrations to and from Workday, and have the capability to maintain these or create additional integrations as our ecosystem evolves.”
