Plone and Drupal: Different Approaches, Different Results
paul.nowak wrote: Matt, thanks for the comments. I made an error on the version of Plone. It's 2.5 Plone running on Zope 2.9x. In regards to the additional products, we have a skin installed and we have a product that we had custom developed for us that connects to a PostgreSQL database. We've looked at slow PostgreSQL queries causing problems and have not been able to find an issue. We've also tested for the case where the PostgreSQL server is down and have not been able to create an issue. We therefor...

Breakfast on Broadway Serves Up Podcasting as Its First Course for 2006
February to Focus on Metro NY's New Underground Dark Fiber Network

By: Marketwire .

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 01/31/06 -- The BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY seminar series kicked off its 2006 campaign on January 19 addressing one of content delivery's hottest topics -- podcasting. Attendees gathered at TELEHOUSE's BROADWAY Center located at 25 Broadway in Manhattan, NY, to hear presentations by Globix Media Services and Invisible Hand Networks that covered the topic in its entirety.

The information presented illustrated that there are over twenty million owners of MP3 players, over seventy-five percent of them have listened to or downloaded podcasts, podcasting has exponential growth potential over a relatively short-time period and it will impact the network significantly.

Among the many points covered by Globix Media Services, two were the focus on the user experience and the trend towards greater mainstream adoption. Users expect fast high-quality delivery similar to other content downloads. Podcasts differ from streaming media by offering portable, on-demand access to a myriad of content types including radio programs and video shorts through its local download to a portable media device.

Globix highlighted organizations currently leveraging this technology including Business Week, Nestle-Purina, Volvo, Absolut and IBM to illustrate the enterprise's adoption of podcasting as a marketing vehicle. In addition, Globix addressed the growing impact of podcasting on network infrastructure, specifically network bandwidth and data storage.

"Since podcasts can be encoded (compressed) at different rates, the levels of storage and bandwidth can vary significantly," said Kevin Van Wieren, Business Development Manager of Globix Media Services. "Podcasting requires a solid infrastructure to be successful."

The business models for podcasting discussed by Invisible Hand Networks were advertising, pay per download and subscription services. Of the three, advertising has a fifty percent share, which is split among banner impressions, in-stream ads and sponsorship ads.

IHN's own evaluation of past patterns indicated that podcasting's peak demand period is the first forty hours, and its traffic patterns have many similarities to video games and other content downloads, albeit on different time scales. The peak to mean ratio of this traffic makes it essential to better manage bandwidth demand and pricing.

"With peak-based pricing models, podcasting will be unprofitable as long as it is growing," said Nemo Semret, Invisible Hand Networks' President. "Bandwidth is the largest cost factor and flexibility in managing traffic and commitments is key to profitability."

February 15th's BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY will focus on the availability, capacity and impact of a new, completely underground dark fiber network connecting Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey and how this new route changes the area's telecom dynamic and the role of underground networks in enterprise compliance solutions. Additionally, it focuses on the paramount issues ISPs should be considering in today's marketplace -- technology, networking, client operations and physical locations.
