Cloud Computing: The Adoption of Cloud-Based Solutions

An exclusive Q&A with Atul Saini, CEO & CTO of Fiorano Software

"Enterprises will adopt cloud-based solutions at a steady pace and not in a non-linear manner," noted Atul Saini, CEO & CTO of Fiorano Software, in this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. "Most large enterprises have already been using ‘cloud-based' solutions since all of their applications are typically hosted in their own data centers, which can be thought of as private clouds."

Cloud Computing Journal: A very general question first, about Cloud Computing itself: Surely we've heard all of this before in various forms and guises - grid computing / utility computing, etc.? What is different this time - why is everyone so convinced it will now work?

Atul Saini: An important reason is that network speeds have improved to the point where it is now feasible to effectively use a remotely hosted application. With the concurrent reduction in hardware costs, leading to lower prices to "rent" the hardware rather than purchase, together with the benefits of not having to maintain an in-house staff to manage hardware and applications, the cloud has become attractive for a number of solutions.

Cloud Computing Journal: What are the three main factors driving companies toward the Cloud?

Saini: The three main factors are:

  1. Ease and flexibility of licensing a solution: The solution can be rented and then "dropped" whenever necessary. No need to purchase a capital asset.
  2. Lower hardware and software costs: No capital expenditures, resulting in lower costs overall for operations. Lower capital costs help in a poor/recovering economy.
  3. Lower costs of maintenance: One only needs a minimal maintenance staff to manage cloud-based applications, resulting in even lower cost.

Cloud Computing Journal: And what are the three main barriers preventing some companies from moving some of the on-premise computing to the Cloud?

Saini: The three main barriers are:

  1. Security: Many companies are concerned about moving their corporate data outside the firewall.
  2. Performance: For performance-critical applications, the latencies of cloud-based applications are still considered high.
  3. Control over changes to applications: For complex applications, changes are easier to affect with in-house teams within the firewall.

Cloud Computing Journal: How does your own company's offering/s assist CIOs and organizations/companies?

Saini: The Fiorano Cloud platform allows companies to integrate applications with optimal efficiency, whether the applications are on-premise or distributed across public and private clouds. Fiorano's distributed, peer-to-peer architecture minimizes latencies associated with more traditional solutions and ensures optimized performance that scales linearly.

Cloud Computing Journal: Are there other players in the Cloud ecosystem offering the same - or is your company unique? Why?

Saini: Several other players offer integration solutions across the cloud, but none can match Fiorano's performance, efficiency or ease of administration. This is because none of them implement a truly distributed integration solution (with centralized control), which is essential for optimized performance and scalability.

Cloud Computing Journal: In the future what do you see as being the next "conquests" by virtualization and/or cloud computing? Are there any unclimbed heights yet in the enterprise? Is for example the convergence of telecoms and the cloud the Next Big Thing, or...?

Saini: The primary value of virtualization was to make a single hardware machine look like multiple smaller machines and this has been achieved.

Enterprises will adopt cloud-based solutions at a steady pace and not in a non-linear manner. Most large enterprises have already been using "cloud-based" solutions since all of their applications are typically hosted in their own data centers, which can be thought of as private clouds. Most telecoms are already, by definition, cloud-based since the entire telecom network is hosted outside the premises of the end user. In future, there is tremendous scope for software-based Cloud applications and systems to compete against established telecom companies. Skype is one good example. Cloud-based solutions with the latest event-enabling technology will also compete against Google and eBay.
