NEC's IP Telephony System Implemented at Leading Luxury Hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo

TOKYO, Feb. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NEC Corporation (hereafter NEC) and NEC Nexsolutions, Ltd. today announced the installation of NEC's IP telephony system and broadband network at Tokyo's newest hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. The advanced IP telephony system is capable of servicing the hotel's 650 IP phones and 1,300 IP ports, including its 179 guestrooms and suites, marking the first full implementation of an IP telephony system by a hotel in Japan (note 1).

The IP telephony system, built around NEC's flagship UNIVERGE SV7000 (note 2), provides a broadband platform with advanced security features. The hotel leverages this platform to provide the most up-to-date IT environment for business travelers in the comfort of their rooms. In addition, it allows Mandarin Oriental to offer wireless and wired high speed Internet connections throughout the entire hotel as well as supporting Mandarin Oriental's IP-based High Definition (HD) Video on Demand (VOD) service the first HD VOD implementation in the hospitality industry in Japan. The broadband platform allows for the continuous provision of new multimedia services for guests.

Main features of the system installed at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo: * Realization of high-quality service utilizing broadband platform-based on NEC's UNIVERGE SV7000 The broadband platform was built with NEC's UNIVERGE SV7000, and comprises of approximately 650 IP telephones including "ITR-4D" IP phones for guest rooms and "IPterm85" IP phones for administration offices, a highly reliable multi-layer switch, UNIVERGE IP8800/S302 and a wireless LAN system. A high level of conversation quality is secured by enhancing the priority of the voice service on the network. Moreover, the broadband platform provides a wireless LAN environment, in which Internet access is available from any point in the hotel, including guest rooms and public areas. Also in the guest rooms, the platform supports services such as high-speed wired Internet connections and IP based High Definition (HD) Video-on-Demand (VOD). * Network platform providing robust security and efficient operation In addition to the broadband platform separating the networks for guest service and administration by a firewall, it also logically separates all kinds of media such as voice, data, wireless LAN/video transmission using virtual LAN (VLAN (note 3)) technology. Furthermore, an extremely safe security environment is enabled by the adoption of Isolate-VLAN (note 4) technology, which strengthens the individual security of each guest room. Network management software, WebSAM NetvisorPro, realizes efficient operation management of the broadband platform.
