Our Legacy and the Three-Eyed Monsters of the Future

How can our generation do something real to leave a legacy

Among the innate PR I repeatedly churn out on this blog, I try to imprint the odd piece with some remote integrity, hoping to inspire honest thought (even if in a humorous context). I hope this article is one of the Diamonds in the rough and can engage you a bit more than usual.

I read this week that the human race is consuming one and a half times the natural resources the earth can provide and this is growing exponentially as the population rises.

One and a Half times!
Forget the Sci-fi films and conspiracy theories the truth is plain to see, our consumption is simply not sustainable! The Human race is literally heading for extinction!

And this got me thinking. We had a good run, but what would my generation have to show for it?

In the thousands of years it would take for the world to recover and support the next generation of intelligent life, what will they see of this weird mammalian race that once ruled the earth when they will look back in time through various archaeological studies?

They will uncover the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, a Roman coliseum, Stonehenge and other great icons of human endeavour! All built thousands of years ago and NOTHING to do with us!

So what does this say about "modern man"? Our generation's achievements?

The last decade has seen vast progression in technology, the entire world is connected. But when we vanish as a race will the future archaeologist dig up my virtual Twitter followers, Facebook friends, my likes or my Linkedin Headlines?

The simple answer is NO, because none of it really exists!  If it did Twitter would have a shrine the size of Solomon's temple and Facebook would be an actual continent.

So with the end of the world imminent how can we turn the tables? How can our generation (expert in creating profits out of virtual nothingness) do something real to leave a legacy that can be dug up by the three eyed monsters of the future?

Well we can be the Generation that took control that made a difference that harnessed the world's resources and used our technology to make us sustainable.

The CIO Committee (by Global Business Events) are leading the way, hosting various online discussions with IT/Technology leaders working together to see how they can make a positive difference in the world, from lowering carbon emissions to simply helping someone have a slightly better day! Pamal Sharma - CIO -General Motors stated in one discussion:

"The CIO is in a unique position to do many things that others would struggle with. The reason is that IT now permeates the whole business in a way that even Finance does not - e.g., not all employees manage budgets, but IT covers them all. We should be in a great position to use that intimate knowledge of the business to influence anything that needs it. In short, and to borrow a familiar advertising slogan, IT reaches the parts other departments cannot reach!  Helping with sustainability etc is just one of the tasks for our broad shoulders, but is certainly an important one."

For us to stand any chance large corporations must take control. The CIO Committee  is the first step but the clock is ticking!

Otherwise, apps in production are not easily monitored, have issues that are difficult to detect, and cannot be corrected quickly. Tom Chavez presents the four steps that quality engineers should include in every test plan for apps that produce log output or other machine data. Learn the ste...
