Real-Time Asset Tracking Technology Needed to Enhance Security, Compliance, Utilization by Hazardous Materials Shippers

Survey Finds that Hazardous Materials Transporters are Looking for GPS/GSM-Based Tracking Technologies

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Every day, thousands of shipments of hazardous materials traverse America's cities and towns by rail, road and boat. However, fewer than 10 percent of hazardous materials shippers/transporters have access to real-time tracking data that can identify, locate and monitor the transportation of these materials, according to a recent, cross-industry survey conducted for DP&C Enterprises, LLC. With escalating homeland security and environmental concerns, the survey demonstrated a significant need for immediate implementation of technologies that will enhance security and provide accurate, real-time tracking solutions for hazardous material transportation.

The survey, conducted by the independent research firm markITelligence for DP&C, polled pharmaceutical, chemical, oil/gas and other vertical industry companies on the procedures and technologies currently in place for monitoring hazardous materials during shipment in non-powered containers (rail cars, truck trailers, freight boxes). The survey found that a significant lack of information is available, and that material is often "invisible" during transportation, enhancing risk to national security.

"Today, hazardous materials can leave a warehouse and most shippers have no ability to monitor the location or condition of that material until it arrives at its final destination. That lack of visibility can put America at significant risk."

Study Methodology and Findings

In conducting the study, markITelligence sent email questionnaires to 1,876 top producers of hazardous materials in the pharmaceutical, chemical, oil/gas, defense and other vertical industries. Respondents included decision-makers with responsibility for Fleet Management, Asset Management, Logistics, Shipping/Receiving, Security and Compliance, Transportation, Distribution, Supply Chain, and Plant Management. These individuals reported that their companies have responsibility for managing from 1,000 and 100,000 non-powered assets. More than half of respondents indicated that their companies deploy at least 2,500 non-powered assets to move materials considered hazardous; none had fewer than 1,000.

The study's key findings determined that: -- More than one-half the companies rely on third-party services for asset tracking. The rest track internally, using a combination of GPS-based devices and fleet management software. However, fewer than 10% of companies responding have access to real-time data on the shipments. -- More than two-thirds of respondents agreed that access to real-time data is very important or extremely important. Among this group, 92% were interested in the positive impact such data could have on materials security, and 85% on the potentially positive impact on compliance.

The benefits of access to real-time data for non-powered assets, and in particular those used for transportation of hazardous materials, have far-reaching business efficiency implications. In addition to enhancing security and compliance, such real-time tracking technology can also reduce costs and improve customer service. In a recent pilot program conducted by DP&C with a global chemical company, real-time tracking of isotainer rail cars used to transport chemicals demonstrated that in addition to enhanced security, the technology provided a 10% improvement in the utilization of isotainers, elimination of unauthorized use of its isotainers, and a reduction in overall shipping costs. These benefits resulted from the company's implementation of a DP&C solution that cost less than $2 per day per device.
