Real-Time Asset Tracking Technology Needed to Enhance Security, Compliance, Utilization by Hazardous Materials Shippers

Survey Finds that Hazardous Materials Transporters are Looking for GPS/GSM-Based Tracking Technologies

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Every day, thousands of shipments of hazardous materials traverse America's cities and towns by rail, road and boat. However, fewer than 10 percent of hazardous materials shippers/transporters have access to real-time tracking data that can identify, locate and monitor the transportation of these materials, according to a recent, cross-industry survey conducted for DP&C Enterprises, LLC. With escalating homeland security and environmental concerns, the survey demonstrated a significant need for immediate implementation of technologies that will enhance security and provide accurate, real-time tracking solutions for hazardous material transportation.

The survey, conducted by the independent research firm markITelligence for DP&C, polled pharmaceutical, chemical, oil/gas and other vertical industry companies on the procedures and technologies currently in place for monitoring hazardous materials during shipment in non-powered containers (rail cars, truck trailers, freight boxes). The survey found that a significant lack of information is available, and that material is often "invisible" during transportation, enhancing risk to national security.

"The current debate to secure America's ports and borders ignores the need, demonstrated by our survey, for companies to implement systems that provide real-time tracking for freight containers, rail cars, isotainers, tractor trailers and other methods used for transporting hazardous materials," said Feza Pamir, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "Today, hazardous materials can leave a warehouse and most shippers have no ability to monitor the location or condition of that material until it arrives at its final destination. That lack of visibility can put America at significant risk."

"It is frightening to consider that so few companies have implemented such asset-tracking solutions," explained Pamir. "And when one considers that such solutions provide enhanced efficiency that pays for itself in increased utilization of transportation assets, while simultaneously enhancing security, there is no good business case for failing to implement real-time asset tracking solutions."

Study Methodology and Findings

In conducting the study, markITelligence sent email questionnaires to 1,876 top producers of hazardous materials in the pharmaceutical, chemical, oil/gas, defense and other vertical industries. Respondents included decision-makers with responsibility for Fleet Management, Asset Management, Logistics, Shipping/Receiving, Security and Compliance, Transportation, Distribution, Supply Chain, and Plant Management. These individuals reported that their companies have responsibility for managing from 1,000 and 100,000 non-powered assets. More than half of respondents indicated that their companies deploy at least 2,500 non-powered assets to move materials considered hazardous; none had fewer than 1,000.

The study's key findings determined that: -- More than one-half the companies rely on third-party services for asset tracking. The rest track internally, using a combination of GPS-based devices and fleet management software. However, fewer than 10% of companies responding have access to real-time data on the shipments. -- More than two-thirds of respondents agreed that access to real-time data is very important or extremely important. Among this group, 92% were interested in the positive impact such data could have on materials security, and 85% on the potentially positive impact on compliance.

The benefits of access to real-time data for non-powered assets, and in particular those used for transportation of hazardous materials, have far-reaching business efficiency implications. In addition to enhancing security and compliance, such real-time tracking technology can also reduce costs and improve customer service. In a recent pilot program conducted by DP&C with a global chemical company, real-time tracking of isotainer rail cars used to transport chemicals demonstrated that in addition to enhanced security, the technology provided a 10% improvement in the utilization of isotainers, elimination of unauthorized use of its isotainers, and a reduction in overall shipping costs. These benefits resulted from the company's implementation of a DP&C solution that cost less than $2 per day per device.

"The survey validated our position that implementation of real-time asset tracking technologies for companies engaged in hazardous material shipments can address the need for enhanced security and compliance, while simultaneously reducing costs and enhancing efficiency and supply chain management," Pamir concluded.

"Through this survey, we were able to quantify and qualify the clear need for real-time tracking of hazardous materials," said James M Hannagan, Vice President of Strategy for markITelligence. "The results should have positive implications for DP&C, the industries it serves, and our nation's security."

DP&C Asset Tracking/Management Solutions

DP&C offers a line of innovative and affordable battery powered data collection products that provide asset management solutions where there is no access or limited access to a power source. Using battery powered hardware and web-based data access, assets can be monitored for location and condition for periods of up to 3 years without replacing or recharging the battery.

With DP&C Tracking and Management Solutions, freight, shipping and logistics companies can implement quality control procedures that reduce loss from tampering, theft; temperature change, humidity or impact damage; and misplaced stock or assets. Additionally, because DP&C Solutions enables 24-hour real-time monitoring, the data can provide companies with valuable evidence that can be used in tracking assets and supporting insurance claims.

The solutions' secure server/web interface enables users to manage, track and monitor assets from any global location. DP&C Solutions use GPS technology for location information and application-specific sensors for monitoring conditions. Wireless GSM technologies from major networks are used for data transmission -- ensuring the system will operate globally in any area with GSM coverage. There are no costly installation charges and the tracking unit can be re-deployed, minimizing recurring costs and investment in additional units.

With the mainstreaming of IoT, connected devices, and sensors, data is being generated at a phenomenal rate, particularly at the edge of the network. IDC's FutureScape for IoT report found that by 2019, 40% of IoT data will be stored, processed, analyzed and acted upon at the edge of the network where it is created. Why at the edge? Turns out that sensor data, in most cases, is perishable. Its value is realized within a narrow window after its creation. Further, analytics at the edge provides o...
