WSO2 Technology Executives to Present Sessions on Open Source Approaches to Cloud Middleware and Lean Software at OSCON 2011

WSO2 today announced that O’Reilly’s Open Source Convention 2011 (OSCON 2011) will feature three presentations by WSO2 technology executives. WSO2 Co-founder and CTO Paul Fremantle will lead two sessions on cloud computing: “PaaS Times: Understanding Open Source Platform-as-a-Service” and “Stratos – An Open Source Cloud Platform.” Additionally, WSO2 Director of Solutions Architecture Asanka Abeysinghe will lead the session, “Join the Lean Wave,” discussing the advantages of a lean, open software architecture approach in supporting multiple computing platforms. An OSCON Gold sponsor, WSO2 also will have a booth to demonstrate how its open source middleware enables enterprises to seamlessly deploy applications and Web services on-premise and in the cloud. OSCON runs July 25-29, 2011 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.

Two Takes on Open Source and the Cloud

Paul Fremantle brings extensive experience in open source software development for on-premise and cloud middleware to two presentations on open source cloud deployment. In addition to his role as WSO2 co-founder and CTO, Paul is vice president of the Apache Software Foundation Synapse Project, and co-chair of the OASIS Web Services Reliable eXchange Technical Committee.

Navigating Open Source Platform-as-a-Service

In this session, Paul will examine the key features of platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and the different approaches taken by available open source and proprietary PaaS offerings. Paul will use coding examples to explain how to develop code for a Java PaaS and identify the key application programming interfaces (APIs). He also will review how the WSO2 Stratos cloud platform addresses common PaaS requirements, including support for private cloud, public cloud, and hybrid cloud environments.

Session Title: PaaS Times: Understanding Open Source Platform-as-a-Service

Time: Tuesday, July 26, 2011, 11:30 a.m. – 12:10 p.m.

Location: A103/104

Building an Open Source Cloud Platform

In this session, Paul will explore the requirements of building an open source platform by presenting a case study of how WSO2 Stratos was developed to provide full open source distribution across public, private, and cloud hybrid environments. He will review the concerns of organizations building their own PaaS, whether on a public cloud, Eucalyptus, or Ubuntu Private Cloud. Additionally, Paul will address the challenges of multi-tenancy, elasticity and metering, by guiding attendees through the process of starting their own open source cloud platform.

Session Title: Stratos – An Open Source Cloud Platform

Time: Wednesday, July 27, 2011, 11:30 a.m. – 12:10 p.m.

Location: Portland 251

Lean Enterprise Application Development

Asanka Abeysinghe brings real-world expertise in enterprise open source middleware implementation as WSO2 director of solutions architecture, an Apache Software Foundation committee, and an Apache Synapse contributor. Asanka will demonstrate how the fully componentized, OSGI-compliant WSO2 middleware platform provides a lean approach to addressing some of enterprises’ top portability concerns. Examples will include how applications can connect, migrate between, and burst across on-premise, private and public cloud infrastructures; how a government organization can implement a consumer portal and business API; and how a unified mobile API can be used to integrate heterogeneous back-end systems.

Session Title: Join the Lean Wave

Time: Wednesday, July 27, 2011, 1:40 – 2:30 p.m.

Location: E141

Demonstration: Build Seamlessly Integrated On Premise and Cloud Applications

WSO2 will use its booth at OSCON to demonstrate how the 100% open source WSO2 Carbon, WSO2 Stratos and WSO2 StratosLive enable IT developers to build seamlessly integrated enterprise applications and services—whether they run on local servers, public clouds, private clouds, or hybrid environments.

The award-winning WSO2 Carbon is the industry’s first fully componentized middleware platform for creating, running, and managing composite applications and Web services within a service-oriented architecture (SOA). Built on the OSGi specification, WSO2 Carbon lets developers easily deploy and customize any of its WSO2 Carbon-based middleware products, providing greater flexibility and agility to meet changing enterprise demands.

WSO2 Stratos is the industry’s first complete cloud middleware platform for rapidly building and deploying applications and services with full multi-tenancy and the elasticity, reliability and scalability to support high-volume cloud environments. It is built on top of and extends WSO2 Carbon. WSO2 StratosLive is the public PaaS hosted by WSO2 and powered by the WSO2 Stratos software. Because WSO2 Carbon, WSO2 Stratos and WSO2 StratosLive share the same code, applications and services can be migrated smoothly and safely on premise, to a private cloud, to the public cloud, or to a hybrid environment.
