The Stars Come Out for Facility Management & Property Event Gala Dinner

The event welcomed 150 industry leaders for two days of intensive thought leadership

Productivity, profit, but also sustainability- these are all key drivers at c-level in these times.  Meeting and enhancing demand while maintaining cash flow, reducing the bottom line, but also ensuring growth can be sustained not only in the coming quarters, but in the years to come.  These strategic concerns merge with operations in the workplace, and addressing these challenges is the work of the delegates at the recent Facilities Management and Property Event at the Belfry.

The event welcomed 150 industry leaders for two days of intensive thought leadership, benchmarking, and networking. As a cross vertical initiative Fortune enterprises such as Vodafone, Barclays, Shell, and Diageo, rubbed shoulders with leaders in the public and third sector.

A closed door dinner for speakers and committee members started proceedings. To name a few Philips, GM, BBC, Lundbeck, The Co-Operative, Met Police, Astrazeneca, Royal Mail, EC Harris, Experian, Seven Trent, BT and BAA all met for two hours of private closed discussion that helped set the gathering's tone.

Keynote speaker Mark Dixon, Regus CEO, opened the event officially the following morning. He shared how to implement rapid, beneficial, change, in response to market demand in reference to Regus taking Twitter from one Californian office to ninety-one offices worldwide in twelve weeks. He also addressed how to meet the needs of a mobile workforce. Event chair IPD Occupiers Chris Hedley oversaw proceedings with his expert eye.

Workplace transformation was certainly a key theme. Delegates such as Diageo's Sophia Brown discussed changing the mindset to view the workplace not as a cost centre but as focus for profit and productivity.

In this same vein Geoffrey Hibert of Nottingham City shared how they have made substantial savings in peripheral IT costs and improved public sector employee efficiency through behavioral change. Workplace design, transformation, and policy all combine. What better way to reduce your printing bill than to introduce a new system of shared services, and a clean desk policy, in brand new offices?

With energy cost rising, a trend which sadly looks set to continue, efficiency and sustainability were also key themes of many key note presentations. Martin Smith Head of Energy of Royal Mail talked of the importance of the business when considering green investments. Through making the business case at concept, trial, and project he demonstrated how their operations had seen significant savings. Intelligent use of data, it was stated, should be at the heart of decision making, well aligned monitoring and energy management systems being vital.

Across the board delegates discussed best practice in energy efficiency, energy procurement, and how to maximize value in investment in renewable and other forms of co-generation. Also whether enough could be done to incentivize energy efficiency investment in occupied buildings and not just new builds. These are all topics sure to be discussed further at Global Business Events Energy Summit at the Celtic Manor in February.

Business continuity was also raised. Richard Farmery of the MET Police shared in detail how he had helped ensure effective front line policing during the recent ‘civil disturbances' across England. Many lessons were learned by the delegates from his presentation on how to plan, protect, and maintain business, in the face of the unexpected. He was lucid in sharing the integral nature of a clear and coherent business continuity plan understood across the enterprise. Aside from the strategic this could sometimes come down to the finer seemingly mundane details, right down to the importance of closing the often overlooked fire doors.

In terms of networking (and drinking) the FM&P gala dinner and cocktail reception was the highlight. The black tie function brought together the entire delegation for 4 courses and cocktails. After dinner proceedings were opened by youtube sensation, the activist and performance poet, Martin Powell. Having previously opened the CNN debate on global warming at the Copenhagen Climate Summit his eloquent delivery encapsulated for the delegates the environmental challenge which they must help surmount. As a leader in all senses of the word Billy Davidson Property Director of Vodafone shared his vision.

Political commentator and cabinet insider Michael Portillo delivered the after dinner keynote. An able and engaging raconteur he charmed the delegates with talk of joining the ‘former future prime ministers club.'

In total the FM&P event unified the industry to share common challenges, benchmark, and establish best practice. As solutions unfolded as a result of pier on pier dialogue a range of the industry's leading vendors were on hand to assist. A dynamic programme of pre-organised meetings took place across the two days in order to establish contact, plan next steps, and of course close off the deal and sign off the contract. "

"I would have no hesitation in recommending the FM & Property Event.   It is not only a great opportunity to network with key suppliers in the industry, but also with colleagues from other businesses who are facing similar issues as your own. We found each of the workshops we attended to be extremely informative and interesting and we came away with an armoury of great ideas to change the way we deliver services worldwide. It is an extremely good investment of two days away from the coal face and we will be looking at attending this event at least once a year." Sue Lewis - Head of Facilities - Cable&Wireless

The FM&P event is widely perceived to offer tremendous value to all those who participate and would like to thank there leading sponsors G4s, Total and Steelcase Solutions who made it all possible.

"We had an extremely successful event - it even beat our best expectations." Oliver Ronald - Direcor - Steelcase Solutions"

Larry O'brien - Director at Planon has worked with the FM&P event year on year and said they looked forward to the next meeting at the Celtic Manor 3-4th April.

Lee Williams CEO of ‘FM&P Event organiser' Global Business Events said "it is always a real privilege and an honour to assemble such a gathering. We look forward to continuing to provide a platform for these important conversations and discussions next year at both our Energy, fleet, and FM&P events at the Celtic Manor. We would like to thank our leading sponsors G4s, Total and Steelcase Solutions who made it all possible as well as the continuing support from FM World."

Keeping an application running at scale can be a daunting task. When do you need to add more capacity? Larger databases? Additional servers? These questions get harder as the complexity of your application grows.
