All-SSD Cloud Start-Up Gets $25 Million from Some Familiar Faces

The start-up is supposed to have early access systems deployed with some of the biggest cloud service providers

SolidFire, a two-year-old all-SSD primary storage for the cloud computing start-up transplanted from Atlanta to Boulder, Colorado, has raised a $25 million B round from existing investors New Enterprise Associates, Valhalla Partners and Novak Biddle. It also took in contributions from newcomers Frank Slootman, former CEO of Data Domain, David Schneider, former VP of worldwide sales at Data Domain, and Greg Papadopoulos, former CTO of Sun.

That makes $37 million altogether. The new money is earmarked for sales and marketing.

The start-up is supposed to have early access systems deployed with some of the biggest cloud service providers.

SolidFire's Element operating system combines a scale-out all-solid-state architecture with patented efficiency technologies that are supposed to dramatically reduce power, cooling, and capacity consumption. The start-up reportedly dedups, compresses and provisions in real-time, making usually pricey SSD storage more efficient.

Designed for operation at cloud-scale, SolidFire's multi-tenant architecture reportedly lets cloud service providers of the IaaS, SaaS and PaaS stripe guarantee sustained performance to thousands of servers in a single storage system. That performance is supposed to attract more cloud-leery enterprise software to the take the plunge.

The company was started by LeftHand Networks émigrés after HP bought the iSCSI storage house in 2008.
