Professionalism in Information Security Key for Success

Public and private sectors endorse approach by IISP (Institute of Information Security Professionals)

Jonathan Hoyle, Director General for Government and Industry Cyber Security at GCHQ, has used the IISP's 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) to highlight the role that professionalism in information security will play in enhancing the UK's economic prosperity.

Hoyle's comments were followed by Dr John Meakin, BP's Director of Digital Security and Chief Information Security Officer, who announced that BP has integrated the IISP certification process into its IT professional skills and Licence to Work processes.

Jonathan Hoyle said: "Cyberspace presents an unprecedented opportunity to enhance the UK's economic prosperity for the future. Effective Information Security, underpinned by professionalisation and the continued growth of cyber skills in academia, will be a cornerstone for achieving success in this challenging technological environment. The IISP should be a key player in those initiatives with the IISP Skills Framework becoming the basis for the public sector standard."

John Meakin said: "BP recognises the critical role that truly professional Info Security staff play in addressing the latest rapidly-evolving cyber threats - only through understanding the way business uses information and IT can we adequately protect the information against sophisticated, targeted threats. That is why BP has integrated the IISP certification process into our IT professional skills and Licence to Work processes that will apply to all our Info Security staff going forward."

In September, as part of the Government's investment in cyber security, a consortium comprising the IISP, CREST and Royal Holloway's Information Security Group (ISG) was appointed by CESG to provide certification for UK Government Information Assurance (IA) professionals. The consortium was awarded a licence to issue the CESG Certified Professional Mark based on the IISP Skills Framework, as part of a certification scheme driven by CESG, the IA arm of GCHQ.

Most organizations are awash today in data and IT systems, yet they're still struggling mightily to use these invaluable assets to meet the rising demand for new digital solutions and customer experiences that drive innovation and growth. Keeping an application running at scale can be a daunting task. When do you need to add more capacity? Larger databases? Additional servers? These questions get harder as the complexity of your application grows. Microservice based architectures and cloud-based dynamic infrastructures are technologies that help you keep your application running with high availability, even during times of extreme scaling. But real cloud success, at scale, requires much more than a basic lift-and-shift migrati...

When applications are hosted on servers, they produce immense quantities of logging data. Quality engineers should verify that apps are producing log data that is existent, correct, consumable, and complete. Otherwise, apps in production are not easily monitored, have issues that are difficult to detect, and cannot be corrected quickly. Tom Chavez presents the four steps that quality engineers should include in every test plan for apps that produce log output or other machine data. Learn the ste...
