Optimize Your Existing Storage

Premier Dallas restaurant reopens its doors next week, unveiling Fresh | Local | Flavor

describe the imageThe storage needs of most organizations have exploded in the past several years. While hardware advances have kept pace with demand for the most part, budgets haven’t always done so. For most organizations, it’s necessary to squeeze every last bit of capacity out of your existing storage infrastructure. This lets you put off new storage purchases which, in turn, means higher capacity when you do make those purchases.

Here are some of the top ways you can make better use of your current storage infrastructure:

•    Tiered solutions. IT departments and data centers are getting much better about making effective use of older equipment. Old servers can be delployed as file servers for non-essential data, or for data that isn’t access frequently. This frees up your newer, faster storage solutions for the data your organization needs on a more immediate basis. Even if you’re not using a full-blown tiered solution, you can move your less-used data to secondary storage hardware on an ad hoc basis.

•    Deduplication. Deduplication isn’t really optional anymore. The storage environment we’ve built over the last couple of decades has lent itself to severe amounts of data duplication. By using deduplication technologies – whether that take the form of a deduplication scan or whether it’s emerging in-line deduplication technologies – you free up significant amounts of space.

•    Effective storage management. Enterprise storage management solutions will greatly increase your storage system efficiency. They continually monitor and manage your use of storage resources, making sure you’re getting the most from your infrastructure at any given moment.

•    Consider cloud storage. Cloud storage has made its mark on the consumer world in the past year with the success of services like Dropbox. Even Apple has gotten into the cloud storage game with its release of iCloud alongside iOS 5. Cloud storage has inherent scalability that you simply cannot get with traditional storage infrastructure.

Correctly managing your existing storage and devoting some resources to maximizing utilization can be the solution to your storage needs. At the very least, it can help make sure your organization’s storage systems are running with the highest possible degree of efficiency and utilization.

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete.
