Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on the Occasion of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials

OTTAWA, April 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - Over the past six days, the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials have been taking place at the 1976 Olympic Pool in Montréal, Quebec.

More than 700 swimmers have given their all, striving to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. For the first time in Canadian sports history, these selection trials have been presented by Swimming Canada in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Paralympic Committee.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. We are committed to working with Canada's sport organizations to support our athletes, and we are proud to promote Canadian sport excellence through federal programs and policies that contribute to athletic achievement in world-class competition.

As Minister of State (Sport), I congratulate all the athletes who have competed in the swimming trials. I also acknowledge, with pride, the tremendous accomplishment of those who have qualified to compete in the London Games. Your talent and determination inspire Canadians from coast to coast to coast, and we all look forward to cheering you on this summer.
