Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV) Awarded Two New U.S. Patents
Strengthens First Class 'ATC' Patent Portfolio

By: PR Newswire
May. 30, 2006 12:30 PM

RESTON, Va., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Satellite Ventures, LP (MSV) announced today that the United States Patent Office has awarded the company two more patents to bolster its extensive ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) patent portfolio. This award brings the number of patents to eleven total U.S. ATC patents issued recently to MSV.

The two newly issued patents are U.S. Patent No. 7,039,400 entitled, "Systems and Methods for Monitoring Terrestrially Reused Satellite Frequencies to Reduce Potential Interference" and U.S. Patent No. 7,031,702 entitled, "Additional Systems and Methods for Monitoring Terrestrially Reused Satellite Frequencies to Reduce Potential Interference." Each of the patents relate to the systems and methods of effectively detecting and mitigating possible interference between a ground-based ATC communications network and a satellite-based network within which it works.

"The ability to reuse frequencies between our ATC network and the satellite network is critical to the design and deployment of a commercially viable hybrid terrestrial-satellite system," said Dr. Peter D. Karabinis, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of MSV and an inventor of both patents. "These patents illustrate a number of techniques conceived by MSV to help ensure that the reuse of frequencies does not result in unwanted interference."

In addition to the eleven issued U.S. patents consisting of MSS/ATC features and functionality, approximately 90 additional patent applications are pending in the U.S. The patents, when issued, are expected to significantly add to the strength and breadth of MSV's already best-in-class MSS/ATC patent portfolio. Corresponding patent applications have also been filed in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia and elsewhere.

About Mobile Satellite Ventures

MSV is developing the first hybrid cellular-satellite communications network, which will create a new category of wireless services and reshape the telecommunications industry through the delivery of ubiquitous, transparent and seamless coverage of North America to conventional handsets. It has extensive patents on the technology and holds the first FCC license to provide these services. For North American coverage, MSV and its joint venture partner MSV Canada have started construction of two satellites and the associated ground segment of the network. The MSV satellites will be the most powerful and technologically advanced commercial satellites ever built. When completed, the MSV network will transform communications through the delivery of advanced emergency response, aviation and transportation services as well as content-rich entertainment services to consumers through interoperable, user-friendly voice, video and high-speed data services.

MSV is privately held and its primary investors include Motient Corporation (Pink Sheets: MNCP), SkyTerra Communications , TMI Communications and Columbia Capital.
