The families of three Mason children affected by blood cancers and blood disorders have joined to raise awareness and funds for research through the 2nd Annual Blazin’ With Love 5K Run/Walk and Cornhole Tournament. The family-focused event will take place Saturday, September 1, 2012. Events will take place in Mason at The Golf Center at Kings Island with proceeds benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Tri-State Southern Ohio Chapter.
Of the three families involved, two children are thriving after successful bone marrow transplants. The other is back to sports after two and a half years of treatment. All have battled long treatment phases and debilitating side effects yet, all are getting second chances that weren’t available as little as two decades ago.
“We are thankful to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society because without them, we’d be staring at survival rates that were as little as 5 percent just 20 years ago,” notes Christine Lothrop, mother of one the survivors. “Still, there is no cure, which is why we must continue to fund life-saving research.”
Event highlights include a kids’ run, silent auction, wine ring toss, music, and food. The 5K run/walk will begin at 5:00 p.m. (with registration starting at 4:00 p.m.) followed by the cornhole tournament at 6:15 p.m. and the silent auction. Cash prizes will be awarded for race competitors and silent auction items include sports tickets, spa services, vacation stays, gift baskets, jewelry, and more.
PowerNet Global is the presenting sponsor for the event. “To the many families affected by Leukemia and Lymphoma, we offer our support,” Bernie Stevens, president and CEO of PowerNet Global, said. “The passion that friends and family have for those affected does not go unnoticed. We wish the families and the event continued success.”
Platinum sponsors are Hoxworth Blood Center and Buckeye Running Company. Those interested in participating in the event can pre-register online at www.blazinwithlove5k.wix.com/event. Discounted registration is available for those that sign up before Saturday, August 18. Race day registration also accepted.
