According to a recent study by the research firm IPR, Smartphone Feature Analysis: an Application of ABYO, the pending release of iPhone’s next version and the introduction of Windows 8 will reinvigorate an already highly competitive smartphone market. Android device makers will be required to respond by retooling smartphone feature sets, lowering prices and providing options that are more flexible.
IPR’s feature analysis highlights Android and Windows 8 vulnerabilities by assessing study participants’ willingness to pay for certain smartphone features. The study results allow researchers to estimate exactly how many people would desire a particular feature at a particular price. The iPhone, which already possesses some of the most desirable attributes such as high-resolution display, is rumored to include an even larger screen with greater resolution in its next release. Windows 8 has also aggressively positioned for the next generation of expected features at anticipated lower price points.
The IPR study illustrates that, although price sensitivity will always be a factor in purchase decisions, smartphone features have become a critical component of a buyer’s willingness to pay. Those leaning toward an iPhone are less likely to switch to Windows 8 or Android phones. IPR’s current smartphone research validates that it will take lower price points to maintain and expand the current client base of the Android market.
