More than 1,000 Catholic institutions, media outlets, and individual content providers, communicating in 6 different languages, spread over 15 countries, have come together to create the Aleteia network, working to select and share with all “truth seekers” the best answers to peoples’ questions about faith, life, and society. Aleteia (ah-la-tay-ah) from the Greek meaning “truth.”
Every minute two billion people now use the Internet, exchanging 168 million emails, conducting 700,000 Internet searches, and posting another 700,000 comments on Facebook alone. The world has changed more in the past 20 years than in the previous century.
The multiplicity of Christian websites constitutes one of the most active communities on the Internet, but most of these websites have only a local or national audience. Their voice deserves to be heard in a comprehensive way across the planet.
aleteia.org was created to provide Catholics with a worldwide network, in order to participate with an authentic voice in the debates of the contemporary world.
Aleteia and its 1,000+ partners have decided today to adapt to this new way of sharing knowledge through creating Aleteia (in Greek Aleteia means "Truth"), which consists in three complementary aspects:
- A network which brings together Catholic and ecumenical partners (media, ecclesiastical movements, institutions) and individuals (members, contributors, experts) to identify and select content,
- A collaborative platform for dissemination (aleteia.org) that provides clear and reliable answers to all the questions people ask or wonder about, in regard to faith, life and society. Through this platform the network will highlight the most beautiful "pearls" of content it can find—the best answers as selected by the network—transmitting these to a global audience.
- An evangelization movement carried out by the Internet community, as well as through other social networks and finally in the real world. The network will share and disseminate the best content selections from its growing number of partners in order to reach everyone in his or her native culture and language.
Aleteia, published today in 6 languages (English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic), seeks to become a source of reference not only for the general public but also for journalists, catechists, opinion leaders and all those seeking information about the Christian faith. Its audience will have access, free of charge and quickly, to quality content constantly enriched and reviewed by the network experts.
Aleteia, which includes an editorial committee consisting of 200 globally recognized experts, is a project supported by the Foundation for Evangelization through the Media (FEM), established in Rome in 2011 as an aid to all the important evangelization efforts being made through media.
Initiated by a group of influential lay people, this project is being developed by a team of 37 journalists and technologists. It is chaired by Jesus Colina in Rome, with a technology lab and "social media" team led by David G. Lejeune of Washington, D.C. Andrea Salvati, a leading manager of Google Italy, has joined Aleteia as its CEO to help with its development and growth.
On the occasion of its launch, Jesus Colina, President of Aleteia, says:
"The digital revolution is changing the world and we must ensure that the proclamation of the Gospel adapts to this new context. It is essential that the Church also benefits from the power of the Internet. This is a crucial issue for the transmission of the faith, as Benedict XVI has often said. The Pope has called for new initiatives to seize the opportunities offered by the digital continent. Today, there are a multitude of good Christian media sources stemming from individuals, parishes, ecclesiastical movements, and dioceses around the world, but these media outlets have resources and thus audiences that are far smaller than the international media that are shaping modern culture. Christian voices and ideas must be part of the public debate on an equal footing. The Aleteia network is an attempt to respond to this challenge.”
