We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
BURLINGTON, ONTARIO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/19/06 -- Unique Dual Frequency RFID Technology for Global Sports Industry
IPICO Inc. (TSX VENTURE: RFD) is pleased to announce that its Sports Timekeeping ("STK") solutions have been successfully introduced to the global sports industry. Based on its proprietary IP-X(TM) Dual Frequency and UHF RFID technology, they include a portfolio of STK shoe, bike and other tags, as well as STK readers and software modules. During the past year, IPICO and its strategic partners in South Africa, Australia and the USA have conducted extensive tests to qualify IPICO's STK product portfolio. These solutions are used in the timekeeping of mass participation sports events, including marathon and cross-country running, cycling and other events.
"The sport timekeeping market is one of the key vertical markets for IPICO over the short and medium term" said Luther Erasmus, COO of IPICO. "Our Dual Frequency technology platform has been developed at the Integrated Circuit level and excels in applications where large volumes of dynamic tag populations must be read in difficult RF environments at distances from 0.5 meter up to 2 meters, and with an accuracy of 20 milliseconds or better. The sports market is therefore ideal for stress testing and qualifying the technology platforms for other mainstream applications."
IPICO was responsible for timekeeping in April at the Absa Cape Epic mountain biking event presented by adidas in South Africa. More than 1,000 riders from 37 countries participated in this 8-day event - the world's largest full-service mountain biking race covering over 921 kilometres of rugged terrain. Organizers used Dual Frequency RFID tags and readers to identify and track riders, their rider bags and mountain bikes, as well as the more than 420 staff that supported the event. The integrated equipment and services provided with IPICO equipment included the STK solution, mountain bike identification for security and storage in-between stages, rider bags asset management, as well as rider and staff identification and access control.
Of the Australian-based time keeping service providers that participated in the development, initial testing and qualification of IPICO's STK products, iCrystal, who uses IPICO's UHF-based RFID products in cycling and motorcycling timing, used these products during the recent Commonwealth Games cycling trials in Melbourne.
IPICO will launch its STK solution in the USA with Mercury Sports Group from Peoria, Illinois at the popular Steamboat Classic running event in Illinois on June 17, 2006. Mercury successfully tested the solution at the recent Bolder-Boulder road running event in Colorado, the second largest road running event in the USA. Mercury provided real time information of the international team events to television commentators, as well as on the Internet.
IPICO has signed an exclusive distribution agreement for its STK products and solutions in South Africa with Insite-Sport, an event management company. Insite-Sport also introduced the STK portfolio to the local athletics federation, Athletics South Africa ("ASA"), which used it with great success at the first four Nedbank sponsored ASA marathon events of 2006. ASA is expected to roll the solution out on a national level for the 2007 road running season.
IPICO will begin testing and qualifying the STK solutions with timekeepers in Asia and Europe, including members of the World Timers Association. It is also structuring its STK offering in a company dedicated to the global marketing and distribution of the STK product portfolio, which will also provide equipment rental and timekeeping services to selected high-profile sport events around the world.
IPICO is currently certifying and obtaining the necessary approvals for its STK reader portfolio. It is also developing a small capsule Dual Frequency STK tag that will be used for specific sport applications such as single and multi-sport events that include swimming, cycling and running. Together with the STK shoe and bike tag, this ankle or wrist tag will allow IPICO to address most mass participation sport events.
IPICO's other Dual Frequency tags complement its STK solution, including ISO cards, asset tags and wristband tags to provide integrated event, conference and other people management services.
ABOUT IPICO INC.: IPICO is an RFID and global visible commerce supply-chain solution supplier with operations in the USA, South Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. IPICO produces smart labels and tags based on the IP-X(TM) communication protocol. IPICO's low interference readers comply with regulatory requirements in major geographical regions, and allow for multi-reader rollout in close proximity. The IPICO DIMI(TM) middleware platform manages applications in large-scale, distributed systems, while the DIMI(TM) data and connectivity architecture allows for effective device management, data switching and data security. IPICO's low cost RFID products excel at long read range, fast multi-read anti-collision and high thru-beam read-speeds of dynamic tag populations. Beyond athletes tracking, these products are used to optimize the management of items, people, animals and processes within the logistic supply chain and other values chains.
