Miami Orthodontist Offers More Comfortable Orthodontic Treatment With Temporary Anchorage Devices

MIAMI, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 09/23/12 -- Patients seeking orthodontic treatment in Miami can get it done faster, more efficiently and without the need for headgear when their orthodontist uses temporary anchorage devices.

"These devices can be placed with a simple, painless procedure, and they make a big difference in the effectiveness and final result of orthodontics. They're one exciting new technological advance that has been made in the field during the last decade," said Dr. Pedro Alquizar, a Miami orthodontist.

Temporary anchorage devices, known as TADs, are mini implants or microscrews approximately as big around as the head of a pin that are put into the jaw and used to move teeth. They allow orthodontists to isolate tooth movement in a way that is not possible with the arch wire used in regular braces that causes any movement of one tooth to affect the others.

"These anchors can be placed wherever needed to be most effective at moving teeth into alignment, which is usually much faster than traditional methods and often prevents the need for headgear or oral surgery," said Dr. Phillip Kaner, a Kendall braces provider since 1974.

They can also be used to stabilize an anchor tooth or eliminate the need to use a tooth as an anchor completely. TADs treat complex malocclusions, such as canine impaction, molar intrusion, maxillary occlusal cant, spacing issues and anterior open bites.

Before this device, patients with certain orthodontic problems like protruding front teeth would have needed headgear followed by braces. Now, Alquizar or Kaner, who are also Miami Invisalign providers, can place TADs at the back of jaw and use elastics or springs to move teeth into alignment instead, and the patient does not need headgear.

"Inserting a TAD takes about 10 minutes and is done using a needle-free anesthetic. They are removed in a couple minutes when the patient's braces are ready to come off. They are a wonderful asset to have in orthodontic treatment," said Alquizar.
