Richmond Hill Orthodontist at Liberty Orthodontic Centre Encourages Extra Attention to Oral Care

RICHMOND HILL, ON -- (Marketwire) -- 09/23/12 -- The school year has started again, and it is important for all North York orthodontics patients, especially those with braces rather than removable orthodontic appliances, to remember to take time out of their day to properly brush and floss their teeth.

Markham Invisalign provider Dr. Arun Rajasekaran of Liberty Orthodontic Centre encourages all of his Richmond Hill patients, including adults and children who wear braces, to pay close attention to their brushing and flossing habits, even while at school and work. Failing to brush and floss can lead to buildup, which can then lead to cavities and gum disease. Braces patients must be especially careful in their cleaning.

While wearing braces, food, sugars and liquids can build up after eating and drinking. The brackets and wires of metal braces create small spaces that allow sugars from drinks and food particles drinks to settle.

"Patients should always pay close attention to cleaning during orthodontic treatment to avoid damage to the enamel, and to prevent gum disease and cavities from forming," said Rajasekaran, a Richmond Hill orthodontist who serves patients of all ages. "If not, over time, the minerals that make up the enamel can be broken down by plaque, which can create a lifetime of problems. Plaque is formed when food debris is not brushed off teeth after eating."

Healthy Diets Lead to Healthy Teeth
At Liberty Orthodontic Centre, it is recommended that all patients follow a tooth friendly diet. Most people are aware that sugary or acidic foods and drinks can lead to tooth decay. But starchy foods, like potato chips, can also stick to teeth, which can lead to tooth and gum disease.

It is also important to avoid foods that might damage the wires and brackets while wearing braces. Patients are encouraged to avoid hard or sticky foods that might pull the wires or brackets. This will prevent patients from needing extra appointments with the orthodontist, which will keep the orthodontics costs to a minimum.
