Norman AS, the global leader in threat discovery, malware forensics and analysis, and industrial control system protection solutions, today released the third installment of its ongoing video series, “Inside Network Security: Cybercrime, Malware and Today’s Emerging Threats.”
Featuring the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of San Diego Gas & Electric, Jessie Knight, this episode is titled, “It’s a Brand New Utility World.” Knight answers probing interview questions about energy utility security from behind-the-scenes host, Norman AS General Manager for North America, Darin Andersen.
After overseeing the most successful smart grid deployment in the country, Knight explores the increased security challenges that go hand-in-hand with managing new information exchange technologies. With more than 2.4 million meters deployed in his system, Knight recounts the transformation from the centralized energy utility system of the past to today’s “Islands of activity with different kinds of energy supplies and different kinds of usages.”
In addition to managing digital information to and from third party providers and suppliers of new energy sources, today’s energy facilities must also communicate usage data with their end-use customers. Knight describes the importance of managing these relationships with stringent information security standards to guard against the inevitable threats and “bad actors.”
“Knight accurately describes the complications of securing automated data supplies,” said Andersen. “As smart grid technology enables enhanced communication, it presents more areas of entry for cybercriminals. Well-trained cyber security teams and experts like Knight and are crucial to the protection of our energy utilities.”
Norman’s video series to promote cyber security awareness will continue next week. This week’s video is available today on the Norman AS YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehbWecYGbq0.
