Microsoft Starts Taking Win8 Pre-Orders

Microsoft started taking pre-orders for Windows 8 Friday. The upgrade price is $70.

The widgetry is set to be released on October 26, when the software can be downloaded for $40, an offer that will expire at the end of January. The offer extends to XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Buyers can reserve the software at Microsoft's stores, Amazon.com, Best Buy and Staples.

Microsoft hasn't disclosed what it will cost to install the software from scratch.

Recent buyers of Windows 7 can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for 15 bucks until the end of January.

Acer, Asustek, Dell, HP, Samsung and Sony are taking pre-orders for machines bundled with Windows 8.

Office 2013, the "most ambitious release of Office" ever, has been released to manufacturing.
