Mouser Electronics, Inc., a design-fulfillment global distributor of semiconductors and electronic components, today congratulates Principal Engineer, Bill Groves of Arlington, MA, for winning both Mouser’s Third 500 Engineering Challenge and the ultimate Grand Prize Award of an autographed Tony Kanaan racing helmet. Groves’ innovative design concept helped the Mouser / KV Racing Technology Team find a more effective means of monitoring and controlling damper temperature during IndyCar races.

The Mouser 500 Engineering Challenge involved a series of three design challenges posed to electronic design engineers and racing enthusiasts, asking for innovative solutions to difficult matters in IndyCar racing. The third challenge, which ran through September 15th, invited participants to design a damper insulation pad to heat and cool the car’s shock absorbers during a race. Each IndyCar uses four dampers (shock absorbers) as part of its racing suspension. During race conditions, the dampers are subjected to heat due to the rear dampers’ proximity to the engine and high loads. The challenge was to design a damper insulation pad that can be heated or cooled to maintain and monitor an optimal operating temperature of 80˚C +/-5˚C throughout the race. The final solution required two separate insulation pad systems (front & rear) with a single control unit.
Ten solutions deemed to be the best from the challenge were reviewed by the Mouser / KV Racing Technology Team. Groves won the 3rd Challenge to receive the Apple iPad 3. He and the two other winners from the previous 500 Engineering Challenges were entered to win the Grand Prize of an autographed Tony Kanaan racing helmet.
