If you’ve never been to the Grand Canyon, you’re missing out on one of Earth’s greatest sights. However, you may soon get a chance to see it from your computer like no one’s seen it before: through Google Maps. Google’s maps team is currently at the Grand Canyon, using the Trekker to map the Canyon’s ridges, trails and everything else you’d want to check out. The Trekker, which Google showed off for the first time in June, is a wearable backpack that houses a camera system, allowing for 360 degree images. The Trekker has more than a dozen 5 megapixel lenses and a battery that lasts all day, and is powered using nothing more than an Android phone. Though the team is just starting out, the images will ultimately be uploaded to Google Maps for everyone to see. So if you’ve never been – or just want to go again – keep an eye out for the Grand Canyon, coming soon to a computer near you.
