LONDON, October 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
It's recently been revealed by motoring organisations that bringing the British Summer Time (BST) forward an hour may save lives. MotorQuoteDirect, a leading car insurance quote website, has been looking into this topic of debate.
Joe de Vries, of MotorQuoteDirect, has been commenting: "On the face of it, it makes good sense; more daylight driving will mean safer conditions for all. As the weather deteriorates towards the winter months and it inevitably gets darker earlier on in the day, typically around five or six o'clock in the afternoon currently, this consequently leads to trickier driving conditions. The Institute of Motoring (IAM) and the Department for Transport (DfT) have also found substantial evidence to back-up the suggestion of bringing the BST forward by an hour."
As Joe mentions above, the issue has been raised by the IAM and they are calling for changes to be made to the BST in order to ultimately prevent accidents. Furthermore, to back this up, the DfT has recently found that by moving the BST forward an hour, around 80 deaths could be prevented and at least 200 serious injuries on the UK's roads will be prevented each year.
MotorQuoteDirect has suggested that bringing the BST forward an hour will cause some controversy, despite the idea being backed by numerous high profile organisations. Additionally, they've commented that by making such changes, many cyclists and pedestrians would benefit whilst school children would also have a safer journey home.
The IAM have suggested a three year trial of the idea in order to monitor the results and gather enough information and data in order to make an informed decision about whether the number of accidents, injuries and fatalities reduces during the three year period.
MotorQuoteDirect advocates safe commuting and thoroughly backs the plan if it will indeed reduce accidents and save lives.
