MILPITAS, Calif., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Globalstar, a world leader in providing mobile satellite voice and data services to business, announced today that its independent gateway operator in Mexico, Globalstar de Mexico, is expanding its simplex or one-way data coverage throughout all of Mexico and to areas of northern Central America. With the resulting coverage enhancements, Globalstar simplex data customers will now be able to seamlessly access the company's satellite network from Alaska and northern Canada southward to parts of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and the Pacific coast maritime region of South America.
The capability to offer simplex data service and solutions throughout Mexico and the surrounding region is the result of additional hardware being added to the ground station or satellite gateway operated by Globalstar de Mexico. The satellite gateway is used to provide Globalstar customers with access to ground based public telephone and data networks via the Globalstar satellite constellation.
"Today's announcement is extremely important for we can now offer our logistics, asset tracking and other simplex data customers continuous high quality and reliable satellite simplex data coverage from Alaska south through Mexico, Latin America and deep into the South American continent", said Jay Monroe, Chairman and CEO of Globalstar, Inc. Mr. Monroe added, "Simplex data is one of our fastest growing services and with our partner Globalstar de Mexico, we anticipate seeing continued growth throughout the Mexican marketplace."
The new applique also paves the way for Globalstar de Mexico to complete the deployment of over 13,000 simplex modems that are to be used in Enciclomedia, a major educational project. The company and its customers have already installed close to 3,500 simplex data modems in elementary schools, primarily located in the central region of the country, and is continuing to install units in schools throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and south Mexico.
Globalstar has offered simplex data service in the U.S. and Canada since 2003, and throughout Europe, the Middle East and across the north Atlantic region since early 2005. Globalstar recently announced expansion of simplex data coverage into parts of Australia and the Asia Pacific region as well as Venezuela, Latin America and parts of South America.
Globalstar simplex service allows customers to track mobile assets -- such as vehicles, tractor-trailers, railcars, cargo containers and marine vessels, using GPS or other location-based software. Because of this, it is an ideal solution for various AVL, marine and fishing vessel monitoring applications. The service can also be used for a wide variety of industrial and security applications to monitor and send information from fixed assets, such as environmental measuring instruments and utility meters, or report the state of various mobile devices and their locations.
Using the Globalstar satellite network and an approved integrated simplex modem solution, companies will be able to economically monitor their assets from virtually anywhere within the Globalstar simplex coverage area. The data is sent back to a customer's control and monitoring facility via the Globalstar constellation of low-earth-orbiting satellites. This information can be received at any time from remote installations far beyond the reach of ground-based communications systems.
