The advisory is based on preliminary reports that the product may have been contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7. Wegmans has announced a voluntary recall for these products. The products were withdrawn from the market by Wegmans on November 1, 2012 out of an abundance of caution, and not at the request of any regulatory agency. Illnesses are being investigated, but no illnesses have been confirmed as related to State Garden products. State Garden is fully cooperating with all federal and state authorities in connection with this matter. The investigation is currently ongoing and, therefore, there is no further information or details that can be provided at this time.
About Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. Coli O157:H7)
E. coli O157:H7 causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly.
