Leave GoDaddy Behind with VPS Hosting Plans

How valuable is the uptime for an Internet business?

How valuable is the uptime for an Internet business? Plenty valuable, especially in the wake of the September server outage at web hosting firm GoDaddy, which affected a multitude of customers.

GoDaddy is the Internet's largest registrar, hosting millions of websites on its servers. At the time of the outage, rumors were strong that someone had hacked the GoDaddy servers. According to TechNewsWorld, a Twitter user named @AnonymousOwn3r tried to claim responsibility for bringing down the servers at GoDaddy.

But GoDaddy later announced that its downtime loss wasn't the work of an anonymous hacker, but rather was due to 'a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables.' To make up for the losses to clients, GoDaddy later offered a 30 percent discount to compensate customers.

But that wasn't enough for some. In the weeks afterward, a class-action lawsuit was filed against GoDaddy by a website owner, who claimed in the lawsuit filing that GoDaddy's guaranteed services failed his site and others. By violating its 99.9 percent uptime hosting guarantee, GoDaddy failed to provide the required services to its customers. Mentioned specifically in the lawsuit was that GoDaddy didn't meet its guarantee of no downtime of more than 43.2 minutes over a 30-day period, which it  certainly had on that downtime day.

So where does this leave small business users who need a stronger guarantee of service from a partner? Should website owners stay with the Internet's largest registrar, or move on to another? With choices available from discounters to shared cloud server hosts like VPS hosting from Myhosting.com, opportunities for web hosting are vast on the web. Here are a few tips to look for when researching potential new partners in web uptime management.

Web Site Storage
How much web storage space does your site need? Many beginner sites use less than 5MB of web space, especially if your site is mostly text-driven. But as you add video clips, images and more, your needs for storage will rise accordingly. Ask your web host company about different storage levels.

FTP Capability
FTP is commonly used by web developers and clients to transfer web pages and other files from their computer to a web host's computer. Once files are sent FTP, the web pages are uploaded to the web for viewing. When searching out a web host, getting FTP access and the ability to upload your pages by email or browser is pretty much mandatory.

Speed and Reliability
Reliability of web pages loading is the backbone of the Web. If a user visits a website that doesn't load, the user clicks elsewhere. This is what's at the heart of the class action suit filed against GoDaddy.

Web hosts need to guarantee 99.9 percent reliability. A site that's frequently down will lose a lot of visitors. Make sure your choice of new host provides you with documentation of uptime for websites it hosts. Try out different sites during peak and off-peak times.

What's exciting about finding a great hosting firm is the ability to choose flexible pricing, including even bundled services in many instances; choosing your desired needs in power supply, bandwidth and rack space for your company, and having options to grow your hosting needs as your business grows.
