Norman AS, the global leader in threat discovery, malware forensics and analysis, and industrial control system (ICS) protection solutions, introduced a new installment of its “Inside Network Security” video series. Joe Weiss, a managing partner of Applied Control Solutions, discusses senior management’s responsibility to incentivize operations and control systems teams more effectively, with the goal of maximizing defenses against cyber threats. This installment is titled, “Senior Management Must Incent IT Personnel.”
As cyber criminals increasingly target control systems, Weiss suggests that many senior management teams fail to grasp the need to invest in the security resources tailored to the unique characteristics of control systems. He also notes that operations and control systems security teams have fundamentally different goals that can result in weaknesses in the organization’s cyber defenses. Operations IT teams are incented to build firewalls and other defenses that protect critical data. Control system IT teams are rewarded for keeping infrastructure operating, no matter what. This singular focus on keeping systems working can cause teams to undertaking tasks that expose systems to cyber attack.
“To ensure maximum protection of critical infrastructure and systems, senior managers need to understand the unique characteristics of control systems, as well as ensure IT teams effectively collaborate to make certain all organization assets receive maximum protection,” said video series host and Norman AS General Manager, North America, Darin Andersen. “Weiss is absolutely correct—without a more holistic focus, cyber defenses will be suboptimal.”
