TORONTO, Dec. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Construction is currently underway on North America's first fully digital hospital, and Toronto Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jerome Edelstein has pledged $25,000 to its development. Located at Keele Street and Wilson Avenue in Toronto's northwest end, the new facility of the Humber River Regional Hospital aims to revolutionize health care. It combines state-of-the-art technologies and lean design to optimize the focus on patient care, most importantly, because it will allow care providers more time at the bedside of patients by streamlining and automating processes.
"Being involved in both public and private medicine, I get to see firsthand the power that sufficient funding can have on patient well being," Dr. Edelstein states. "Having devoted my life to medicine, I'm excited that Canada is going to be at the forefront of healthcare with this new hospital."
As Head of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Humber River Regional Hospital, Dr. Edelstein oversees a team of 9 active plastic surgeons and over 4,700 patients annually. The new facility will house a large Plastic Surgery Division.
"I couldn't be happier to use money from my private cosmetic practice to give back to the community and help deliver a level of care that will be unsurpassed. We take great care with each and every single patient at Edelstein Cosmetic. With the new facilities at the hospital, public health patients will be able to enjoy some of those same benefits and attention as my private practice. It's an important step for medicine in Toronto, one that will impact the whole of the country and set a precedent for great patient care. As a doctor, I wouldn't feel right standing on the sidelines for this historic occasion."
Dr. Edelstein's pledge supports the hospital at which he routinely performs necessary plastic and reconstructive surgeries.
Revolutionizing Healthcare in the Digital Age
A digital hospital encompasses the latest technological advancements in science and medicine to provide patients the highest quality of care, improving efficiency, accuracy, reliability and safety. It is designed to create systems without any interruptions, with full integration and full interoperability for complete automation. Some examples of what Humber River Regional Hospital will be implementing include self-serve kiosks for patient check in and information, "smart bed" technology as well as 80% of the total number of patient rooms assigned as single occupancy.
At the moment, there is no other hospital in North America that is fully digital.
Furthermore, the goal of the hospital is to achieve a rating of LEED® Silver with sound environmental planning, reducing energy consumption by 40% compared to the standard set out in the Model National Energy Code for Buildings.
Completion is scheduled for 2015. Donate to Humber River Hospital Foundation here.
