Russell 1000(R) Index Reflected a 15.1% Year-to-Date Gain as of 12/7 for 2012 as Russell Investments Predicts Modest U.S. Market Growth in 2013

SEATTLE, WA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/12/12 -- The U.S. large-cap Russell 1000® Index reflected a return of 15.1% year-to-date as of December 7th, 2012, driven primarily by strong gains in the Consumer Discretionary (24.2%), Financial Services (23.3%) and Healthcare (20.1%) sectors, according to Russell Indexes. This follows a 1.5% return for the Index in 2011 and compares to 16.9% and 15.3% returns for the Russell Eurozone Index and Russell Emerging Markets Index, respectively, for the same time period.

In Russell Investments' recently released 2013 Annual Global Outlook, its team of global investment strategists highlight core expectations for capital markets along with a point of view on central investment issues for the coming year. For 2013, the Outlook projects a year-end level of 830 for the Russell 1000 Index, which would reflect a 5.8% increase from 784.5 as of market close on Dec. 7, 2012. This is based on expectations for continued moderate U.S. economic growth and single-digit equity market returns against the backdrop of episodic European-generated volatility.

"President Obama and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives face twin challenges: the immediate fiscal cliff and long-term budget issues facing the federal government," said Stephen Wood, Chief Market Strategist for Russell Investments. "Considering the menu of possible policy choices, our expectation is that the likely fiscal tightening in 2013 will not be severe enough to send the U.S. economy into recession. That said, we'll continue to see ongoing volatility and a 'risk-on/risk-off' investment environment globally, creating the need for a dynamic, multi-asset portfolio approach."

Investment in Global, International or Emerging markets may be significantly affected by political or economic conditions and regulatory requirements in a particular country. Investments in non-U.S. markets can involve risks of currency fluctuation, political and economic instability, different accounting standards and foreign taxation. Such securities may be less liquid and more volatile. Investments in emerging or developing markets involve exposure to economic structures that are generally less diverse and mature, and political systems with less stability than in more developed countries.

Diversification, strategic asset allocation and multi-asset investing do not assure profit or protect against loss in declining markets.
