An Insight Into the Life of a World's Strongest Man Competitor

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 12/17/12 -- In light of the World's Strongest Man being aired on Channel 5 this festive period, sponsors GNC caught up with 7 times Worlds Strongest Man competitor, Mark Felix, to understand in a bit more detail the pressures, commitments and the fitness routine of a Strongman.

Since 2004, Mark Felix has been competing professionally and training as a Strongman. He currently possesses the world record in the single handed Deadlift, impressively lifting 225kg as well as other achievements including being the world record holder in the iron mind rolling thunder (323.5lbs) and the Viking vice grip champion (2010, 2011, 2012).

As a Met-Rx sponsored athlete, Mark understands the importance of using the right supplements for sports nutrition in order to perform to the best of his ability. He says, "My job is quite physical so I need to maintain mass via diet and supplements."

Felix commented that, "you don't need to be big to be strong; you just need to adjust your diet and training a little."

Mark's training is not for the faint hearted. He trains six times a week, increasing weight and decreasing reps with every set. Sunday's workout is always an outdoor training event, whatever the weather. He uses everything from tyres, atlas stones, logs, giant dumbbells and a car Deadlift.

However, he says that it's "important to listen to your body," and stresses how crucial it is to "have one rest day each week."

He also spoke out about his diet. Mark has been known to use whey for protein and eats "every two - three hours (because it) helps maintain my energy levels and avoids that full feeling after a large meal." Using supplements, he says, "works - when strength training it's very difficult to maintain or build mass even on the healthiest of food only diets."

Felix coached GNC through his top tips for keeping up with his fitness routine. First on the list was setting a specific goal of what it is you would like to achieve, followed by having and sticking to a training plan. Mark added that, "a training partner is great for motivation."
