LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 12/24/12 -- With the festive season fast approaching, many British families are packing their cases and getting ready for a different kind of Christmas. Research suggests that this year Christmas holiday bookings have rocketed by 160%, with the Canary Islands proving to be the most popular destination. Almost a third of festive holiday makers are expected to be families with young children.
It's not surprising: more and more parents are looking for cheap holiday options, and off-season deals from travel agencies, and companies such as Monarch are making spending Christmas abroad more tempting than ever.
One thing to consider before you go is how to keep the children entertained. In Britain, children can occupy themselves over Christmas with lots of presents, festive TV specials and visits from extended family (bearing even more presents). Once you commit yourself to spending Christmas in Tenerife, you're going to be limited by your luggage allowance, but thankfully Tenerife has lots of festive activities to entertain and excite kids.
Los Cristianos is one of the most popular towns in Tenerife, and it has a bustling programme of Christmas events. On 23 December, Santa's elves will be on hand to meet children and dole out presents. You can avoid Christmas Day boredom setting in at the evening dance, held at 7pm in the fairground. There's also a children's fair in Santa Cruz, where kids can enjoy a variety of activities throughout the festive season.
Every Spanish town has an intricate nativity scene, and one way to keep children entertained for a while is to get them to spot el caganer - the unfortunate figure in the tableau who has been taken with an urgent need to use the toilet. This is a great Spanish tradition, and one that can prompt plenty of giggles among the young.
If you're still around on 5 January, you'll get to see the Three Kings - Spain's answer to Santa Claus. The kings arrive on the back of real camels and parade through the towns throwing gifts down to the children. Live zoo animals, a parade and presents all make this a great way to keep kids entertained and also discover a bit of local flavour.
