What the abbreviation implies for SCJP and OCPJP?
- SCJP - Sun Certified Java Programmer is the certification name previously referred by Sun Microsystems.
- OCPJP - Oracle Certified Professional for Java Programmer is the certification name referred by Oracle after takeover.
OCPJP 7 was designed and released by Oracle (exam code 1Z1-804) and it is based on JDK 7. The exam introduced new concepts like try with resources, multi catch exception handling, using underscore (_) in numbers, diamond operator, NIO2 and JDBC 4.0. The exam also added design patterns section to tests Singleton and DAO pattern knowledge. OCAJP 7 is the pre-certification requirement to take OCPJP 7 exam. No more SCJP :). The new exams are fully under Oracle brand with lot of changes in terms of mandatory pre-certification or pre-training requirement. SCJP 6.0 was designated and released by Sun (exam code CX-310-065) and it was based on JDK 6. The exam introduced new topics covering Console, NavigableSet, and NavigableMap. The same exam has been renamed under Oracle as OCPJP 6 as of October 2011. SCJP 5.0 was designated and released by Sun (exam code CX-310-055) and it was based on JDK 5. Note that Sun Microsystems suddenly changed referring version number 5 instead of 1.5. This release was called Java Tiger version. This version added new concepts like variable arguments, autoboxing, and generic types, and dropped the bit shifting topics from previous exams. The same exam has been renamed under Oracle as OCPJP 6 as of October 2011. SCJP 1.4 was designated and released by Sun (exam code CX-310-035) and it was based on JDK 1.4.
The OCPJP/SCJP exam is based on Java SE versions like below:
SCJP 1.2 was designated and released by Sun (exam code CX-310-025) and it was based on JDK 1.2.
Conclusion
The current name for Java SE Programmer Certification is OCPJP 7 or OCP Java SE 7 Programmer. You can find complete info about latest Java Certifications here.
