We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
BOSTON, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Just weeks after its creation, Diet.com's podcast has launched into the number-one spot as the most popular diet podcast on iTunes.
Titled "Diet.com Diet and Fitness Podcast," this free audio podcast delivers 3-4 minute audio clips providing practical diet, fitness, and health tips. Listeners can download the podcast right on Diet.com or subscribe to it on iTunes by searching for "diet podcast."
"In today's fast-paced, on-the-go environment, people simply do not have the time to find credible diet or fitness tips and advice," says Mike Zhang, President of Diet.com. "Visitors can easily download a podcast file to their MP3 player or iPod and listen to it while jogging, driving, walking to class, or working at their desk."
An editorial team at Diet.com picks topics for each podcast that are fun and informative. Podcast topics include, "Kick Treadmill Workouts Up a Notch," "Different Styles for Different Shapes," and "Beat the Heat - Exercise at Home." The host of the podcast, Lady Diet, speaks to listeners on a personal level by giving real-life advice. In "College Food Dilemmas," meant for the younger podcast audience, Lady Diet explains how she made it through college without gaining the "Freshman 15."
The growth in popularity of podcasting has accelerated this year. Some 9.2 million U.S. web users - or 6.6 percent of the U.S. adult online population - have recently downloaded an audio podcast, and 4.0 percent, or 5.6 million people, have recently downloaded a video podcast, according to Nielsen//NetRatings.
Diet.com is the first major online diet company that has taken the steps to offer podcasting. Podcasting about Health is still in its infancy compared to other more established genres such as Education and Business. At the time of this release, there were only 515 podcasts under the Fitness and Nutrition subcategory on iTunes as opposed to 3,036 under the Business category, 4,984 under the Education category, and 4,188 under the Comedy category.
