Prince George’s County, Maryland Police are responsible for the safety of one of the nation’s largest school systems, including more than 330 public and private schools in a nearly 500 square mile jurisdiction. The County chose Optotraffic, LLC as the best solution to reduce speeding near these schools.
One of the requirements of the County’s program is a report to the State Highway Administration regarding enforcement on state roads in the County. In every school zone studied using Optotraffic’s solution, speeding and crashes decreased and compliance with the posted speed limit increased. For example, at Brandywine Elementary School, compliance rose from 21 percent to 80 percent. In another school zone, crashes fell by 23 percent in only eight months.
The police report, titled Prince George’s County Speed Camera Evaluation, said parents remarked about how much easier it now is to enter and exit the school property when dropping off or picking up their children. Another County school’s Parent Teacher Student Association went on record about the “great benefit” the automated speed enforcement system provided. One school principal noted not only did the automated system reduce speeding, but it also reduced reckless driving in general around the school.
