Covanta Energy Recognized as the 2012 Outstanding Corporate Citizen by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities

MORRISTOWN, NJ -- (Marketwire) -- 02/06/13 -- The New Jersey State League of Municipalities named Covanta Energy, a world leader in sustainable waste management and renewable energy, as the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Corporate Citizen Award. The New Jersey State League of Municipalities (NJSLOM) presents the award to corporations that contribute the most to the success of the League and provide high quality programs for New Jersey's municipalities. This is the first year Covanta has received the award.

"At Covanta, we strive every day to provide world-class sustainable waste management and renewable energy services to municipalities around the country and in New Jersey," said Paul Stauder, Covanta senior vice president of business management. "The active practice of corporate citizenship as well as the development of strong partnerships with municipalities and their leaders is integral to the success of our business, so we are honored to be recognized with this award from NJSLOM."

Covanta, based in Morristown, NJ is an active corporate citizen in New Jersey. The company has been a proud supporter of the Sustainable Jersey Program since its inception in 2009 and has supported NJSLOM programs including the annual league conference. The company is also an integral partner in the NJ Division of Consumer Affair's Project Medicine Drop Program, safely and sustainably disposing of unwanted medications at no cost at its Energy-from-Waste facilities throughout the state.

Covanta's three Energy-from-Waste facilities in Essex, Union and Warren counties sustainably process approximately 4,800 tons of municipal solid waste per day into 120 megawatts of renewable electricity -- enough to power 85,000 homes. The facilities also recycle enough metal each year to build over 20,000 new hybrid cars.

Recovering energy from waste after efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle is a critical component of managing residual waste. For every ton of municipal solid waste processed at Energy-from-Waste facilities, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by the equivalent of approximately one ton less of carbon dioxide emissions. This is possible due to the avoidance of methane from landfills, the offset of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel electrical production, and the recovery of metals for recycling.

About Covanta
Covanta Energy Corporation is an internationally recognized owner and operator of large-scale Energy-from-Waste and renewable energy projects and a recipient of the Energy Innovator Award from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Covanta's 44 Energy-from-Waste facilities provide communities with an environmentally sound solution to their solid waste disposal needs by using that municipal solid waste to generate clean, renewable energy. Annually, Covanta's modern Energy-from-Waste facilities safely and securely convert approximately 20 million tons of waste into 9 million megawatt hours of clean renewable electricity and more than 9 billion pounds of steam that are sold to a variety of industries. Wearable devices have come of age. The primary applications of wearables so far have been "the Quantified Self" or the tracking of one's fitness and health status. We propose the evolution of wearables into social and emotional communication devices. Our BE(tm) sensor uses light to visualize the skin conductance response. Our sensors are very inexpensive and can be massively distributed to audiences or groups of any size, in order to gauge reactions to performances, video, or any kind of present...

Skeuomorphism usually means retaining existing design cues in something new that doesn’t actually need them. However, the concept of skeuomorphism can be thought of as relating more broadly to applying existing patterns to new technologies that, in fact, cry out for new approaches. The industrial software market has treated data with the mentality of “collect everything now, worry about how to use it later.” We now find ourselves buried in data, with the pervasive connectivity of the (Industrial) Internet of Things only piling on more numbers. There’s too much data and not enough information. Operational Hadoop and the Lambda Architecture for Streaming Data Apache Hadoop is emerging as a distributed platform for handling large and fast incoming streams of data. Predictive maintenance, supply chain optimization, and Internet-of-Things analysis are examples where Hadoop provides the scalable storage, processing, and analytics platform to gain meaningful insights from granular data that is typically only valuable from a large-scale, aggregate view. One architecture useful for capturing...

DevOps is about increasing efficiency, but nothing is more inefficient than building the same application twice. However, this is a routine occurrence with enterprise applications that need both a rich desktop web interface and strong mobile support. With recent technological advances from Isomorphic Software and others, it is now feasible to create a rich desktop and tuned mobile experience with a single codebase, without compromising performance or usability.

Application metrics, logs, and business KPIs are a goldmine. It’s easy to get started with the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana) – you can see lots of people coming up with impressive dashboards, in less than a day, with no previous experience. Going from proof-of-concept to production tends to be a bit more difficult, unfortunately, and it tends to gobble up our attention, time, and money. In his session at DevOps Summit, Otis Gospodnetić, co-author of Lucene in Action and founder...
The speed of software changes in growing and large scale rapid-paced DevOps environments presents a challenge for continuous testing. Many organizations struggle to get this right. Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship, and run any Linux application on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is particularly helpful for microservice architectures because their successful implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism – which is precisely one of the features of Docker. Microservice architectures are therefore becoming more popular, and are increasingly seen as an interesting option even for smaller projects, instead of bein...
