ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR -- (Marketwire) -- 02/15/13 -- Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, addressed Canada's growing skills and labour shortage in a keynote speech at the 2012 Employer of Distinction Awards luncheon. Minister Raitt was speaking on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
"The Harper Government is focused on job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity," said Minister Raitt. "Overcoming the challenge of skills and labour shortages is crucial to Canada's economic competitiveness and growth."
Governments, business, training institutions and other groups must work together to provide Canadians with the information, training and work experience needed for the careers that are in demand.
Recently, the Government of Canada has taken action on a number of fronts to ensure that all Canadians can make informed job choices and get the right skills and training they need for the jobs that are available. For example, a new, enhanced Job Alerts system has been introduced so that unemployed workers will know what skills are required for the jobs that are available in their area.
Skills development and training are important elements in addressing Canada's labour and skills shortages. That's why the Government's Economic Action Plan 2012 increased funding to programs that give work experience to youth and people with disabilities. Through these investments, the Government continues to achieve results for Canadians.
Additionally, as part of its broader strategy to create an educated, skilled and flexible workforce, last year the Government transferred $2.7 billion to the provinces and territories to help ensure that Canadians get the training they need to participate fully in the labour market.
