We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Just a few years ago, most people didn't know what digital media was; and yet today, millions of Americans are posting personal videos on web sites like Google and YouTube that are viewed by millions around the world. Nielsen/Net Ratings recently reported an estimated 2.7 billion queries were conducted at Google.com in June 2006, and YouTube.com raised their monthly traffic 297 percent, from 4.9 million visitors to19.6 million a month in the first six months of the year.
With the explosive growth of this online video craze, other websites have taken notice and are finding new ways to capitalize on the phenomenon. AmericanBaby.com and BarterBee.com are two sites that are currently promoting online contests where members can post video clips to win cash and prizes.
At AmericanBaby.com, parents can post photos and videos with a chance to win up to $1,000 and at BarterBee.com, members post video clips for the chance to win prizes that include a 42" plasma HDTV.
"It's amazing," says Robert Alvin, President of BarterBee.com. "We're not halfway through our summer contest 'Be The Bee,' and the videos we have seen are over the top. It's not just the creativity, but the quality of the clips. These entries and the thousands viewing them demonstrate how the tech media craze has reached the average American household."
BarterBee.com, the largest online site for trading used CDs, DVDs and video games, is inviting its members to post videos depicting how they can be the BarterBee. Clips have ranged from high-end graphic animations depicting the BarterBee to little kids dressed up like the bee taking care of transactions for members. The videos are can be seen on YouTube.com ( http://youtube.com/profile_videos?user=BarterBee ).
A new winner is selected every two weeks and can choose between an iPod Nano, portable DVD player or Sony PSP. At the end of the contest, the bi-weekly winners will go "antenna to antenna" and the winning video will receive a 42" Panasonic plasma HDTV.
Will this craze continue? Alvin thinks so. "The web is revolutionizing how we interact with each other. With websites like YouTube.com, we can share any part of our lives online, and you can bet someone, somewhere in the world will be there to watch it."
