MINNEAPOLIS, MN and ST. PAUL, MN -- (Marketwire) -- 03/06/13 -- It was announced today that KARE 11 News won the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism. The 2013 Cronkite Awards recognize exceptional work produced during the 2011-2012 election cycle.
In 2012, Minnesota voters faced two historic measures to change the state's Constitution -- the Voter Identification Amendment and the Marriage Amendment. Many voters were confused by the proposals and conflict over the Marriage Amendment was an emotional debate playing out in every community. KARE 11 teamed up with Minnesota Public Radio News (MPR) to hear from voters on both sides from across Minnesota. The in-depth "Minnesota Marriage Debate" series produced five television stories -- each one airing in a different newscast on October 18, 2012. MPR broadcast additional coverage for their radio listeners.
According to the Cronkite Awards news release, judges were impressed with KARE 11's coverage of the Marriage Amendment through the Minnesota Public Radio partnership. Judges recognized the station's efforts to find thought-provoking viewpoints that propelled the story and informed the viewer. As stated by the judges, "KARE's strength is in its storytelling. Coverage was fair, balanced and deeply personal."

The Cronkite Awards are presented by the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
