OpDemand, a next-generation cloud management platform, today announced support for deploying, monitoring and maintaining Heroku applications inside OpDemand’s management console. Software teams can now integrate Heroku into a larger cloud management strategy that provides centralized configuration management, monitoring and auditing of all changes to Heroku applications. This integration showcases OpDemand’s multi-cloud capabilities, including the unique ability to manage Platform-as-a-Service and Infrastructure-as-a-Service within a single management console.
“Heroku’s platform has revolutionized cloud application deployment,” says Gabriel Monroy, CTO of OpDemand, who just returned from Heroku’s Waza conference in San Francisco. “However, most software teams need to compliment Heroku applications with databases, middleware and other services. While Heroku includes a large selection of add-ons, developers increasingly require custom EC2 add-ons that provide more flexibility at a lower price point. With OpDemand’s Heroku integration, software teams can finally incorporate both Heroku and Amazon EC2 into a unified cloud management solution.”
Inside OpDemand, Heroku applications can consume a wide range of EC2-powered databases, caches and other backing services. This allows Heroku users to easily swap out expensive or inflexible add-ons for new custom add-ons built to exact specifications. Both the EC2 add-ons and the Heroku applications are then managed together, from a unified console, using OpDemand’s signature toolbar and orchestration technology.
Once Heroku applications are placed into an OpDemand environment, any changes are automatically detected and logged inside the event feed, providing IT managers with unparalleled visibility into the developer-centric world of Heroku. Developers can continue to use Heroku’s command-line tools, with OpDemand providing web-based access to application changes, status and configuration. OpDemand can also be used to scale Heroku “dynos”, modify environment variables, track process states and more.
“Developers love the speed and agility Heroku provides for new projects,” says Joshua Schnell, CEO of OpDemand. “Yet IT managers are still reluctant to use Heroku as it can become prohibitively expensive. OpDemand makes it simple to migrate Heroku applications to and from EC2, providing developers and IT managers the best of both worlds.”
OpDemand’s application templates use deployment automation that is compatible with Heroku’s Cedar stack, enabling the migration of applications to and from Heroku and EC2 without modification. This feature allows customers to experiment with Heroku and EC2 for the same application workload. Customers can then choose whichever provider makes the most sense at that time, knowing the application can be migrated at a later date.
Software teams are encouraged to start a free OpDemand trial, discover and import existing Heroku applications, deploy new Heroku applications straight from GitHub and explore OpDemand’s library of open-source templates.
